TheBigBlack's Rock Top 10

10

New
[A-103 | R-11893]

Paul McCartney
New

Classic Rock | Album | 11 October 2013

Although I live for The Beatles, I have never been a very big McCartney solo fan. His Beatles tracks were always the more sweet and syrupy the songs, and that worked well as a contrast with Lennon - but on their own it is a bit too much nice for me. This album seems pretty straight up without too much polish, which helps the songs be what they are without too much artificial tampering. Definitely the most consistent set of songs he has written in years.

09

Vanishing Point
[A-177 | R-11457]

Mudhoney
Vanishing Point

Grunge Rock | Album | 2 April 2013

Mudhoney are a band that don't stray from the path. They know their style and they play it better than anyone else. With that in mind, we know what this was going to be. It's punk/garage rock, and it's rough an raw as always. They will never be the greatest band on the planet, but they will always scratch an itch that others can't.

08

Fortress
[A-3200 | R-11844]

Alter Bridge
Fortress

Alternative Rock | Album | 25 September 2013

I actually get bored with Alter Bridge whenever I listen, as I find Miles' voice thin and whiney after a couple of songs. For some reason this one didn't affect me as much, so I got to enjoy it for what it is. Tremonti is brilliant as always, and musically this is certainly heavier than anything you will hear on the radio. Songs like 'Bleed It Dry' and 'Cry Me A River' are monsters. Regardless of the album quality though, it is still a stupid band name.

07

Earth Rocker
[A-1202 | R-11531]

Clutch
Earth Rocker

Stoner Rock | Album | 11 March 2013

No one rolls out the groove better than Clutch. They have been playing dirty stoner rock for so long now I can't remember a time without them, and they are easily the best in the genre. Fallon's vocals are unique and soulful, and the guitar tone is like 4 boys hamming out some hemp fuelled garage music.

06

Foreverly
[A-4617 | R-11890]

Billy Joe Armstrong & Norah Jones
Foreverly

Punk Rock | Album | 25 November 2013

Billy Joe has never been known for having an amazing voice, but listening to these covers it is now clear how creepily similar his voice is to the great Phil Everly's. Add the smooth country-tinged tones of Norah Jones and hauntingly beautiful album is born. Green Day fans, don't expect any American Idiot here. This is folk/country to the core.

05

True North
[A-281 | R-11368]

Bad Religion
True North

Punk Rock | Album | 2 January 2013

So BR have churned out the same 3-chord punk album for the 10th time in a row, but who cares? It is fantastic! I'm not sure what draws me to these guys, although I suspect it is the vocals. Whatever the reason, I always love anything they do on first listen, even though pop-punk isn't my usual cup of tea.

04

Sound City, Real To Reel (Motion Picture Soundtrack)
[A-13 | R-12084]

Various Artists
Sound City, Real To Reel (Motion Picture Soundtrack)

Alternative Rock | Album | 12 March 2013

For the soundtrack to a movie that was made about a vintage recording desk, this does a great job of proving the point. It has an amazing vintage feel to it, wrapped in beautiful analogue production. Some songs sound like modern artists playing old songs, and some sound like old artists playing new songs.

03

People, Hell And Angels
[A-129 | R-11383]

Jimi Hendrix
People, Hell And Angels

Classic Rock | Compilation Album | 27 February 2013

Yeah, they are dragging anything they can from those often opened tape vaults now, but somehow they are still finding quality material - Sure, not TOP quality, but still better than most artist can manage today. Great to see the original (untampered with) versions of quite a few tracks we have been begging for, such as Somewhere, Crash Landing and Hey Gypsy Boy. It is amazing what the man achieved in such a short amount of time (3 years), and the massive number of songs he penned.

02

The Next Day
[A-694 | R-11400]

David Bowie
The Next Day

Classic Rock | Album | 8 March 2013

After far too many years of silence Bowie has returned with what is possibly one of his greatest albums. This is a bit of classic Bowie, mixed with some avant-garde, with some modern new-age Bowie throw in too. It is a mixed bag of everything he has ever done, and throw in together to make this dam near a masterpiece. After so many years of seclusion, the rumour is that this is his retirement album. If that is true, it is a brilliant way to finish some a varied career.

01

Aftershock
[A-91 | R-11800]

Motorhead
Aftershock

Hard Rock | Album | 22 October 2013

Motorhead have always been consistent, but consistent doesn't necessarily mean good. Somehow this time round, they have taken all of the things that once made them great, but eventually made them stale - and turned them all into something fresh and new again. This is a MONSTER of an album, smashing the last decade of their work and pissing on its grave. Every track blisters your ears, but has enough melody to make it sing-along worthy. Considering Lemmy's lingering health issues (and his age) each MH album should be treated as their last by fans - but this one feels like the band maybe have felt that themselves. Long live Motorhead.

The Bootleg Series Vol. 10, Another Self Portrait (1969-1971) [Deluxe Edition]
[A-123 | R-11757]

Bob Dylan
The Bootleg Series Vol. 10, Another Self Portrait (1969-1971) [Deluxe Edition]

Classic Rock | Compilation Boxed Set | 27 August 2013

Dylan circa 1970 holds very little interest to many people, mainly due to his dreadfully received 'Self Portrait' album (full of dodgy covers of artists like Gordon Lightfoot), and his turn toward Nashville and a country croon - the very things the hip and happening folkies of New York stood against. In hindsight it is obvious it was a period of finding where he would go next, and a time to shake of the 'voice of the young generation' tag that had hung from his neck like an albatross. Stripped back (without overdubbed arrangements) these tracks are quite amazing, and many of the unreleased tracks are better than those on the albums. As always, Dylan has produced an album of outtakes from his most criticised period - and they are better than most bands could ever hope to record.

The Aeroplane Flies High [Deluxe Reissue]
[A-40 | R-11677]

Smashing Pumpkins
The Aeroplane Flies High [Deluxe Reissue]

Alternative Rock | Singles Boxed Set | 23 July 2013

This one was always going to be a bit odd (a boxed set of previously released singles in expanded formats, now put into a deluxe boxed set that has expanded them yet further.), but Billy has done a pretty good jab as always. The live tracks are a really good representation of the period, and the bonuses are in line with the sort of tracks you would find on a b-side, so they work brilliantly. The 35 minute version of silver$%$^ is a great showcase of the band's abilities at the time.

TheBigBlack's Rock Dishonourable Mentions

The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here
[A-11 | R-11617]

Alice In Chains
The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here

Grunge Rock | Album | 28 May 2013

This is like listening to Jerry Cantrell humming a Lady GaGa song while sleepwalking. It is just boring. There are none of those great light/shade dynamics that make AIC stand out.

Lightning Bolt
[A-39 | R-11831]

Pearl Jam
Lightning Bolt

Grunge Rock | Album | 15 October 2013

If I'd had wanted to hear Air Supply, I would have bought a Kings Of Leon album.

06

The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here
[A-11 | R-11617]

Alice In Chains
The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here

Grunge Rock | Album | 28 May 2013

You could arguably call this their 'sophomore' record after their debut 'Black Gives Way to Blue'. This is AIC v2.0 to coin a trendy phrase. And there is no denying the difference in this incarnation. While Cantrell has always been the major influence musically, there is no denying that Layne put that special touch on the final result. Anyway to cut to the chase, Jerry has a major part in the vocal department. I can't help but draw comparisons with his solo efforts and this record in particular being the next incarnation from Degradation Trip. That aside, even if it is, it is a good listen. Sludgy, heavy, music with droning, and in places haunting lyrics. Can't really find too many faults, apart from the fact it does die out a little toward the end.

05

Fortress
[A-3200 | R-11844]

Alter Bridge
Fortress

Alternative Rock | Album | 25 September 2013

Oh boy, I'm on the edge of being harsh or kind here. I was going to say this is a typical AB release, however I believe musically the guys have matured and if anything increased the tempo a little. Not sure Myles is keeping up really. I like it for the most part, but if you listen carefully, Myles is singing in syllables I reckon as a way to make it look cool/acceptable..???

04

House Of Gold & Bones (Part 2)
[A-837 | R-11022]

Stone Sour
House Of Gold & Bones (Part 2)

Metal | Album | 9 April 2013

I'll add this into as it is actually quite a good listen and I think much less radio friendly than their more recent efforts. Not sure if that was the intention or not compared to Part 1. But in any case this gets many more re-listens from me, so I'll add it in.

03

Black Dog Barking
[A-3372 | R-11610]

Airbourne
Black Dog Barking

Hard Rock | Album | 21 May 2013

Oh boy. Firstly, don't be fooled by the title of the first track and the name of their first EP back in 2004. In any case, am I listening to an Angels/ACDC clone here? I can't help but like it to be honest despite its simplicity.

02

Aftershock
[A-91 | R-11800]

Motorhead
Aftershock

Hard Rock | Album | 22 October 2013

Wow - what an intro to an album (track 1). These newbies on the scene have a big future in front of them. Sorry, what's that?? They have been around since the 70's?? Seriously?? Of course I'm taking the pee as I'll admit up till now, I've been less than interested in Lemmy and his crew. Still don't know why Ace of Spades is their calling card to be honest. But who cares, this record goose-steps all over Ace of Spades. What a brilliant effort at this stage in their career.

01

Earth Rocker
[A-1202 | R-11531]

Clutch
Earth Rocker

Stoner Rock | Album | 11 March 2013

'Everybody get the message? Bluerraaagggghhhh!' Best you do get the message. As these guys are worth investing time in. Mind you, you can take a pick of almost any record and almost any track and you'll get the message pretty darn quick. Best however to skip to the latest record as they just continue to get better and better and delivering that slightly southern-rock tinged sound. Grab a beer, put your feet up and set to 11.

mk's Rock Honourable Mentions

Hesitation Marks
[A-112 | R-11847]

Nine Inch Nails
Hesitation Marks

Rock (Industrial) | Album | 30 August 2013

I will always give Trent and his crew the time of day. Can't really explain why. In any case his records have been hit and miss along the way for me thus the reason I do look forward to a new release but am equally hesitant. This one sits in the thumbs down list for me unfortunately. A little to on the electronic side despite another brilliant vocal effort from Trent. It just doesn't glue with me. Why am I writing this up if I don't like it? Well take a look at how thin my 'like' list is..

The Next Day
[A-694 | R-11400]

David Bowie
The Next Day

Classic Rock | Album | 8 March 2013

If anyone were to tell me I'd be listening to David Bowie all these years later I wouldn't have believed you. Perhaps that is how desperate I am to add to my non-metal Top10 list. In any case, if this were mid-90's, Bowie wouldn't have had a look in on any of my listening time. Which would have been my loss. This is a great modern mish-mash of his work to date.

...Like Clockwork
[A-464 | R-11675]

Queens Of The Stone Age
...Like Clockwork

Alternative Rock | Album | 3 June 2013

This has moments of glory such as 'My God is the Sun' but for some reason I get the sense they are sitting on their deck chairs in the middle of the Arizona desert to occupied on watching the sun go down in order to care about putting together an upbeat cranking QOTSA that we have all come to love. Let's hope this doesn't continue for future releases.

10

The Dream Calls For Blood
[A-307 | R-11740]

Death Angel
The Dream Calls For Blood

Thrash Metal | Album | 11 October 2013

Kudos to these guys for doing something no many bands are able to do - make a comeback album, but then continue to improve every album after it. This album is easily the best since they reformed, and possibly the best of their career, Sure, there will always be those that love the original 3 albums of the 80s, but listening to them subjectively - this album oozes great song writing and musical technicality.

09

Epitome Of Torture
[A-818 | R-11827]

Sodom
Epitome Of Torture

Thrash Metal | Album | 26 April 2013

I usually find recent Sodom albums over-produced and tedious, but this one was something a bit different. The production is rawer, and the songs were quite catchy instead of unrelenting. Apart from the differences in modern recording, this is the closes they have done to their classic album in a long time.

08

Deceiver Of The Gods
[A-396 | R-11753]

Amon Amarth
Deceiver Of The Gods

Death Metal (Melodic) | Album | 25 June 2013

On the first couple of listen this left me a tad cold, but after a break I came back to it - and wondered what the problem was? It is big and brash, and a worthy addition to the Amon Amarth legacy. It does have a slightly different feel though, with many riffs coming off almost thrash in places.

07

Heavy Metal Music
[A-4465 | R-11738]

Newsted
Heavy Metal Music

Metal | Album | 6 August 2013

So good to hear from Jasonic again after all these years, and with a great album to boot. He's never been big in the vocal department, but his vocals here are pretty good (albeit very produced). The songs aren't quite Metallica heavy, but they are a great batch of borderline hard rock / heavy metal tracks.

06

Homo Gusticus
[A-3642 | R-11657]

Zombie Inc.
Homo Gusticus

Death Metal | Album | 26 April 2013

With so many grotesque topics to make jokes of to quality death metal, it is no wonder this is so catchy - both musically, but especially lyrically. The production is great, the music has a nice groove to it that makes it enjoyable from the fist listen, and this is as close as we will ever get to a new Pungent Stench album I suspect - so I love it.

05

The Underground Resistance
[A-24 | R-11392]

Darkthrone
The Underground Resistance

Black Metal | Album | 25 February 2013

Who'da thunk it? Darkthrone are back in TheBigBlack's Top 10, but this old grey mare ain't what she used to be. This is the new 'crust-punk / black'n'roll' band that has disappointed all us long term fans for so many years now. They haven't returned to Soulside Journey, and there is little sign of any Transilvanian Hunger - they have merely perfected what they have been hinting that they are capable of since this new Darkthrone first emerged. It is still lo-fi. It is still punky in attitude. It is still Venom in style. But it finally sounds serious, instead of cheesy. Well, most of it doesn't sound cheesy.

04

Heroes Of Origin
[A-3260 | R-11406]

Hatriot
Heroes Of Origin

Thrash Metal | Album | 25 January 2013

I LOVE this. It was far better than I expected. Having said that though, I think why I loved it so much is because it has reminded me of the sad state thrash is in right now. Firstly, this is like a clone of Exodus when Zetro was on vocals. He has left the band in a hail of gunfire, and then started a new band that is exactly the same (right down to the sound of the guitars). Secondly, I think I miss Zetro being in Exodus so much (sorry Rob, you just aren't as good!) I will latch onto anything remotely close to it. Regardless - This is a balls out, old school sounding thrash album that will make your toes curl with delight.

03

13
[A-8 | R-11560]

Black Sabbath
13

Heavy Metal | Album | 10 June 2013

I had hoped for an album of the year, but realistically I didn't get one. This is still a fantastic album - but not absolutely mind-blowing. What is does do though is capture the magic of the interplay between the original line-up. Even ring-in drummer Brad Wilk (who I hated the idea of, based on his age) did an amazing job of emulating the Bill Ward style. It does suffer a little from the modern production - and my only complaint would be that - but it does need to compete with so many young bands mixing everything on 10 these days that I understand the need to do it that way,

02

Satyricon
[A-74 | R-11741]

Satyricon
Satyricon

Black Metal | Album | 9 September 2013

This is an odd album. It is clearly a different album for Satyricon, but is still obviously them, and is still firmly in the special genre they have created for themselves. A lot slower in places, and with a larger sense of melody throughout, it still has all the trademarks (the unique vocals, the guitar tone, the Frost precision drumming) but it feels like this is a similar painting, but using a different colour palette to the usual. Satyr has mentioned they were burnt out and needed to try something new. I must admit I expected something a bit more radical than this, but it is still noticeably different to any of their recent output. Regardless, the mix of old and new has made it indispensable to my ears.

01

Surgical Steel
[A-408 | R-11752]

Carcass
Surgical Steel

Death Metal (Grindcore) | Album | 12 September 2013

They are a lot of young bands out there that play death metal. Or so they think. Carass play death metal, and every young IWrestledABearOnce Job For A Cowboy Whitechapel fucknut upstart should take notice and pay attention. After a 20 year break Carcass have returned with an album that no only shows the young'uns how the big boys do it, but actually redefines what death metal should be in today's overcrowded scene. There is nothing boring here, or recycled, or cliche - and yet they have not strayed far at all from their signature sound of the late 80s early 90s that made them so great. As said in Thrasher's Abattoir - Hipsters and posers they abhor. This is real DM for fans of metal, not fashion and trend.

Thrash Metal | E.P. | 19 March 2013

Stepping outside the expected norm of staying with their new-found thrash revival Anthrax have released a covers E.P. of their favourite 70s rock heroes. This isn't exactly essential, but not throw away either. Joey's vocals are amazing - especially on track 1 - proving he is still a force to be reckoned with. The song choices are odd, but I think it is brave of Anthrax to wear their influences for the world to see.

Homo Gusticus
[A-3642 | R-11657]

Zombie Inc.
Homo Gusticus

Death Metal | Album | 26 April 2013

Of course, you'd expect me to make mention of this at some point. Another project from Martin S (Pungent Stench fame). He has a great DM vox and knows how to put together a great DM song. I can't say that this would ever fit as a Ps record as it is a little more fast-paced and trad in the DM approach, rather than what he has achieved with PS. Still though this is again a great template for all those fucks out there that think they know how to write a DM song. Take a look over your shoulder for the old dudes who can still tear you a new one.

08

Surgical Steel
[A-408 | R-11752]

Carcass
Surgical Steel

Death Metal (Grindcore) | Album | 12 September 2013

One thing in Carcass favour has always been the raspy vocals of Jeff. Much like Tardy from Obituary, the vocals just add to the brutal/angry sound put across. I do have one point to make however with the modern Carcass sound - the sound is much more a brutal in your face neck-breaking speed, rather than the melodic DM we listened to in the 90's. Necroticism from 91 is still my favourite of theirs. Listen to that and you'll see what I mean. Regardless, and perhaps sadly for the genre, a bunch of blokes in their late 40's can still put together a pummelling effort better than many of the wannabe's that cite these guys as influences. Hopefully we continue to hear more from them.

07

The Paradigm Shift
[A-607 | R-11739]

Korn
The Paradigm Shift

Nu Metal | Album | 4 October 2013

Cutting to the chase here - this is their best effort for a number of years. Do you credit Head's return on this? I'm not sure - Davis is a strong person I thought, so one person's influence on the sound can't be that much that they turn from rap infused rubbish on their last record to the sound we hear on this record. It starts off with some powerful songs kind of in the Untouchables mode. You won't get the dick lyrics and sound of the early stuff. The maturity is there again but this is also back to heavy modern sound that the majority of long-time fans would have come to accept and love.

06

Obsideo

Pestilence
Obsideo

Death Metal | Album | 21 October 2013

I get tired of saying it and Zan agrees. why can't the newbies in the DM scene match it with the old blokes? Trying too hard to be different, when really you just need to be you. That's what a number of the old bands having a renaissance period so-to-speak these days are just killing it (that's in a good way)!!!!!

05

Rationing The Sacred Human Remains
[A-4348 | R-11846]

Parasitic Ejaculation
Rationing The Sacred Human Remains

Death Metal | Album | 22 July 2013

In some ways liking this shows how shallow I can be when it comes to liking some certain music. The Vox sounding like you are churning up some vile vomit from your stomach into the toilet is brilliant!! Match that with a sludgy, in parts up-beat, production sound and you get a tasty recipe of 'Fuck knows what you are singing about but I love it to pieces (human pieces - arms, toes, ears...)' The odd outtake of stabbing some poor person for example is really the tasty coagulated blood you need on the top of your raw meat pizza. Bring it!!!!

04

The Underground Resistance

Darkthrone
The Underground Resistance

Black Metal | Album | 25 February 2013

Darn it, they've gone all serious on me. No 'Canadian Metal', or 'Dungeon Shaker' anywhere here. However don't mind in the slightest. I call it blackened thrash in today's terms - others will disagree. In any case, who cares - I could listen to this all day long.

03

The Divinity Of Purpose
[A-1167 | R-11407]

Hatebreed
The Divinity Of Purpose

Metalcore | Album | 29 January 2013

Mock me as much as you will, but I was very close to putting this number one. They were one of the first bands in the mid-90's providing that slightly up-beat sound to what Pantera were doing at the time. Call it metalcore I don't really care. For me Jasta vox is the standout from all others releasing records with this similar sound. As soon as he sings, you better fucking stand to attention. Ignoring what he has to say brings consequences. Fists up and head high mother fuckers!!!!

Nocturnal Graves
...From The Bloodline Of Cain

Thrash Metal (Blackened) | Album | 12 November 2013

Who would have thought we'd have a bunch of Aussies contributing to the book of masterful Blackened Thrash. This is as good as any efforts from European bands I have heard. Raspy vocals, relentless guitar and drum work with that edgy production that makes you think they ran this over a sharp razor blade before committing to digital sound.

Black Sabbath

Heavy Metal | Album | 10 June 2013

I must firstly point out what a privilege it is to finally hear a new Black Sabbath record on day one of its release. And DEAR GOD, they don't disappoint. The blueprint for the intro to the first track is a little cliche for them, but who cares. This was going to always be a sink or swim exercise - they have proved without a doubt that even without the drugs (except for the ones they take for arthritis pain these days), they are one of the greatest institutions for which this record brings no shame to. I'm happy.

Worthy mention for keeping the 'splatter-metal' genre alive. Inappropriate song titles, full-force, in your face grind and a sprinkling of movie out-takes which have you questioning what these guys do with their spare time, is absolutely spot on for me and puts a smile on my face. Just keep this one hidden from your mum.

Good work guys. The paramedic said I was only unconscious for a few minutes rather than the full resuscitation activity required from listening to previous efforts. This is a good thing as not only is my life saved, but the record is much more palatable than previous pummelling efforts.

Conceived In Sewage

Death Metal | Album | 19 February 2013

I'm aware I am developing a pattern here in my Honourable Mention list - a bunch of Death Metal releases that were almost there. This one certainly fits that mould. Kudos to the guys for changing the tempo here enabling me to catch my breath. To save my poor, weary fingers, similar can be said of Embalmed - Regiment of Death.

Heroes Of Origin
[A-3260 | R-11406]

Hatriot
Heroes Of Origin

Thrash Metal | Album | 25 January 2013

It would be very easy to place this in the Top10 as I am an Exodus fan and even more so I am a Zetro fan. However it is that first bit that puts this record in the worth mentions space. It really is a little too close to that Exodus sound for me to say 'Good job guys'. I'd have likes Zetro and his band of kids to come up with something along the same lines, but easily distinguishable as their own sound. There is nothing here that is their own sound. Not that is a bad thing, as mentioned. It just doesn't make the 10.

Cosmic Child
[A-2309 | R-11532]

New Keepers Of The Water Towers
Cosmic Child

Metal | Album | 11 March 2013

I'm really not sure where to place this one to be honest. It actually requires you to listen closely but that means an investment in a few 10-min plus efforts. Partly for that reason it doesn't make my final top10. Very close, but you need to prepare yourself for an uninterrupted listen to get the full value.

Unborn
[A-1177 | R-11794]

Six Feet Under
Unborn

Death Metal | Album | 18 March 2013

I'll put my hand up as a Barney fan, so have followed SFU with great interest. I'm torn however on this effort. This is very different from the 'let's make it as brutal approach that Barney has always focussed on. Sure his vox is as you'd expect, but there are a number of songs that are very 'light' in the DM mould.

The Headless Ritual

What a diverse piece of music this is? Thrash/Death/Roll in plenty of places. I don't know much about these guys apart from they have got back together in the past 5 or so years and are putting some music together as a bunch of 40-odd year olds that is new and fresh. Look no further than a song like 'When Hammer Meets Bone'. It's got a lot to offer and then some.

I'll put it as honourable but this is very close to a dishonourable. The first track they released 'Our World, it Rumbles tonight' is great. Then we have to put up with some clean vocals from some fill-in a couple of tracks later. The tempo is pretty much dull (call it moody) with the occasional track showing that grit of anger they are known for, thus it scrapes in as a record I'll likely listen to again (and try to forget its failings).
