Although it is often unfair to constantly compare bands similar in style, sometimes the hero worship is so blatant it is hard not to. In the case of Brazilians Piah Mater, the band they are so easily compared to is the metal titan Opeth, and it feels like Piah Mater see it as their duty to pick up the progressive death metal crown that was dropped. Opener 'As Islands Sink' wastes no time diving into the distorted chaos, and launches the album nicely in the direction fans disgruntled with 'new' Opeth have longed for. As a two man band, they manage to weave incredibly intricate harmonic moments into the framework of the bursts of tight death/doom metal, and the hooks are the tempo and stylistic changes coming at unexpected moments. What becomes apparent on repeat listens (regardless of the similarities in style to classic Opeth) is that the band is often willing to take the progressive elements further than their heroes. As examples, the 10+ minute 'Fallow Garden' has a saxophone solo, and the epic closer 'Canicula' has a lengthy passage sung in Portuguese by a female voice before a violin weaves and winds around the guitar line. 'Macaw's Lament' is a short soulful solo guitar arrangement, whilst 'In Fringes' goes in the direction of layered clean vocal harmonies. Overall, the album twists and turns through a death metal / folk interlude template that does seem somewhat familiar (and possibly a little predicable for doing so), but with immense honesty and integrity Piah Mater proves to the metal community that once one band drops out of the race another with a sound so close can easily fill the void if the public are still wanting. It does beg the question though, where is the line between similarity and mimicry?

Following my previous reviews, you will know that I stray from my music foundations and venture into other sounds that prick my ears up. NIN is certainly one of them. Taking a step back from this release, it's hard to believe these guys cut their chops in the late 80's and had their debut in 1989 with Pretty Hate Machine. Gave us some gems such as 'Head Like A Hole' and 'Down In It'. Arguably their pinnacle was the sophomore full-length release The Downward Spiral in 1994 which many suggest is an influential album in the evolution of music in the early 90s, which was shifting into the grunge era but providing different sounds on the side such as this, equally matching the grunge movement. Interestingly they only released 1 more album in the decade before we get to With Teeth. Reznor is a very smart lyricist and by this time had matured in his approach to his music (he'd just come out of rehab). The first track will likely put off many as it is very much a drum and bass sound with an aggressive vocal toward the end of the song. If that bores you, await the second track which is very much in the old-school phase, particularly the chorus. Classic NIN at this point. The remainder of the album is very much in that industrial/rock sound, which is very mature and controlled with Reznor's vocal perfectly placed in the music. Other song highlights include 'The Hand That Feeds', along with the title track 'With Teeth', a slow burner that builds up brilliantly and then finally 'Getting Smaller'. The difference from this being an OK release as opposed to a great one is the quality of the songs on the final third of the record, which most artists suffer from. Perhaps I need to listen more next time.

The band has sometimes been referred to as a supergroup, as its membership has included a number of musicians who have performed with other highly notable acts, such as Guns n' Roses, Noiseworks, Rob Zombie, The Cult, The Rolling Stones, Thin Lizzy and Whitesnake. The band has had substantial changes of membership since its formation, having only its rhythm guitarist David Lowy as a continuing founding member since 2015.

Chris Reifert

Death Metal

Chris Reifert (born February 23, 1968) is an American death metal musician and a pioneer of the death-doom fusion genre. Although his music is more death metal than doom metal, he is one of the first musicians known to have combined the two styles. He played drums on the Death debut album, 'Scream Bloody Gore' (1987). After parting ways with Chuck Schuldiner in 1987, Reifert elected to remain in the San Francisco Bay Area, forming Autopsy in 1987. In his own band, he played not only drums but performed the vocals as well. After several albums, Autopsy split up in 1995 and Reifert and bandmate Danny Coralles began playing in their side-project, Abscess full-time. Autopsy reformed after Abscess' dissolution in 2010.

Dave Ellefson

David Warren Ellefson (born November 12, 1964) is an American musician, best known for his long tenure as the bassist and backing vocalist for thrash metal band Megadeth across two stints. Ellefson initially became an accomplished bassist and honed his songwriting skills while leading several of his own bands through the club scene of North America's Midwest region before relocating to Los Angeles. He was then the bassist of Megadeth from 1983 to their breakup in 2002, and again from 2010 to 2021. In addition to playing bass guitar in Megadeth and The Lucid, Ellefson had various side projects, which include Temple Of Brutality, F5, Killing Machine, and Metal Allegiance.

Dee Snider

Daniel Snider (born March 15, 1955) is an American musician, best known as the lead singer and songwriter of the heavy metal band Twisted Sister. Snider later formed and was the lead singer in the heavy metal bands Desperado, Widowmaker, and SMFs (Sick Mother Fuckers). He also released several solo albums. Snider was ranked #83 in the Hit Parader's Top 100 Metal Vocalists of All Time.

Doc Neeseon

Bernard Patrick 'Doc' Neeson OAM (4 January 1947 - 4 June 2014) was an Australian singer-songwriter and musician. He was the front man for the hard rock band The Angels from its formation in February 1976 through to 1999. The band then split up and reformed in 2008 after a lengthy legal battle where Doc resumed his place as front man. For the group, Neeson was the main singer-songwriter and was the driving force behind the band being propelled into stardom for a period spanning over three decades. He died of a brain tumour on 4 June 2014, aged 67, approximately 18 months from his initial diagnosis.

Glenn Hughes

Glenn Hughes (born 21 August 1951) is an English musician, best known for playing bass and performing vocals in the hard rock band Trapeze and in the Mk. III and IV line-ups of Deep Purple, as well as briefly fronting Black Sabbath in the mid-1980s. In addition to being an active session musician, Hughes also maintains a notable solo career. He currently fronts the supergroup Black Country Communion, and fronted California Breed from 2013 to 2015 and The Dead Daisies from 2019 to 2023. In 2016, Hughes was inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame as a member of Deep Purple.

Paul Baloff

Pavel Nicholas 'Paul' Baloff (April 25, 1960 - February 2, 2002) was an American singer, best known as the original lead vocalist of the thrash metal band Exodus. He was fired from Exodus shortly after the release of the band's 1985 debut album 'Bonded By Blood', and sang with various other bands before rejoining Exodus in 1997. Baloff died of a stroke in 2002.

Steve Di Giorgio (born November 7, 1967) is an American bass guitarist. He is known for his work with numerous heavy metal bands such as Sadus (of whom he was one of the co-founders), Death, Testament, Megadeth, Sebastian Bach, Iced Earth, Autopsy, Obituary, Control Denied, Dragonlord and Charred Walls Of The Damned, and he has performed on over 50 albums as a guest, session or full-time band musician.

Albert Productions

Albert Productions, a division of music publishing and recording company Albert Music, is one of Australia's longest established independent record labels to specialise in rock and roll music. The label was founded in 1963 by Ted Albert, whose family owned and operated the Sydney music publishing house J. Albert & Son.

Peaceville Records

Peaceville Records is a British independent heavy metal record label. The label was founded by Paul 'Hammy' Halmshaw (of the bands Instigators and Civilised Society) in Dewsbury, England, in 1987, who was also a one-time drummer of Sore Throat. Originally a tape label releasing anarcho-punk, the releases moved towards metal through crust punk and similar forms of metal-influenced English hardcore punk. Halmshaw started running the label full-time in 1988, although the original tape label incarnation was founded in 1981 as a vehicle for releasing Instigators demo cassettes. The label is therefore known for the connection between doom metal and the 1980s English crust punk scene. However, the bands My Dying Bride, Darkthrone, Katatonia, Autopsy, Anathema, Paradise Lost, and Opeth - known as the 'Peaceville Stable' - have been the label's most recognizable acts since the 1990s. Peaceville also became known for its anti-major label stance and left wing political outlook. In November 2006, after 25 years at the helm, Halmshaw announced that he and co-manager Lisa Halmshaw would be leaving the label to concentrate on new projects, and that his former assistant, Paul Groundwell, would be taking over general management duties, following the sale of the label to back catalogue specialists Snapper Music, who had distributed Peaceville since 2001.

De Lane Lea Studios

Warner Bros. De Lane Lea Studios is a recording studio, based in Dean Street, Soho, London. Although the studios have mainly been used for dubbing feature films and television programmes, major artists such as The Animals, The Beatles, Herman's Hermits, Soft Machine, Queen, The Rolling Stones, Bee Gees, The Who, The Jimi Hendrix Experience, Pink Floyd, Wishbone Ash, Renaissance, Electric Light Orchestra, Slade and Deep Purple recorded songs there, particularly at the studio's former premises at 129 Kingsway, Holborn, London, and at Engineers Way, Wembley, where Queen recorded demos in 1971. Warner Bros. purchased the studios in November 2012.

The L.A. Forum

The Kia Forum (formerly The Forum) is a multi-purpose indoor arena in Inglewood, California, United States, adjacent to Los Angeles. The Forum opened on December 30, 1967. Architect Charles Luckman's vision was realized by engineers Carl Johnson and Svend Nielsen. It was a groundbreaking structure without extensive internal support pillars that was unique in an indoor arena the size of The Forum. The Forum has previously been known as The Great Western Forum. It is also known informally as the L.A. Forum to distinguish it from other places with the name "Forum". In 2022 automotive company Kia acquired the naming rights, and it is currently known as Kia Forum.

'=1' is the twenty-third studio album by Deep Purple. It is their first album with guitarist Simon McBride, who replaced Steve Morse in 2022. It is also the band's fifth collaboration with producer Bob Ezrin, who has produced every Deep Purple album since 2013's 'Now What?!'.

Deep Purple are an English rock band formed in London in 1967. They are considered to be among the pioneers of hard rock, but their musical approach has changed over the years. Originally formed as a psychedelic rock and progressive rock band, they shifted to a heavier sound in 1970. Deep Purple, together with Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath, have been referred to as the "unholy trinity of British hard rock and heavy metal in the early to mid-seventies". They have sold over 100 million albums worldwide.

Young has referenced it on multiple occasions, including 12 years earlier, in his biography 'Waging Heavy Peace'. After being postponed and teased several times, Neil Young announced in May that he would be releasing the album.

Neil Percival Young (born November 12, 1945) is a Canadian singer and songwriter. After embarking on a music career in Winnipeg in the 1960s, Young moved to Los Angeles, joining the folk-rock group Buffalo Springfield. He then began his solo career, often with backing by the band Crazy Horse, and was also a part-time member of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. He is on Rolling Stone's list of 'The 100 Greatest Musical Artists'. 21 of his albums and singles have been certified Gold and Platinum in U.S. by RIAA certification.

'Coma Of Souls (Remastered)' is a remastered version of the fifth studio album by Kreator. It also includes a concert recorded in Germany in December 1990.

Kreator is a German thrash metal band from Essen, formed in 1982. Along with Destruction, Sodom and Tankard, they are credited as one of the "Big Four" of Teutonic thrash metal, responsible for developing and popularizing the German thrash metal scene as well as pioneering the then-burgeoning death metal and black metal genres during the mid-1980s. They have a large underground fanbase in the international thrash metal community, with their second studio album 'Pleasure To Kill' (1986) regarded as an influential album of the genre. Despite being an influential band, as well as one of the first European thrash metal acts to sign to a major label (signing to Epic Records in 1988), Kreator would not achieve mainstream popularity until later albums post 2010. Kreator has achieved worldwide sales of over two million units for combined sales of all their albums, making them one of the best-selling German thrash metal bands of all time.

'Puncturing The Grotesque' is an E.P. by Autopsy.

Autopsy is an American death metal band formed in Contra Costa County, California, in 1987 by drummer Chris Reifert and guitarist Eric Cutler, shortly after Reifert's departure from Death. The group disbanded in 1995 but reunited in 2009. Along with fellow Bay Area band Possessed and Reifert's previous group Death, Autopsy have been considered a pioneering band in the death metal genre. Early bands such as Entombed, Dismember, Gorefest, Immolation, Cannibal Corpse and Deicide have all credited Autopsy as an influence in their sound.

'Vault 06 (Great Western Forum 1998-07-13)' is the seventh release in Pearl Jam's ongoing Vault series of live albums.

Pearl Jam is an American rock band formed in Seattle, Washington, in 1990. Formed after the demise of guitarist Stone Gossard and bassist Jeff Ament's previous bands, Green River and Mother Love Bone, they broke into the mainstream with their debut album, 'Ten', in 1991. One of the key bands in the grunge movement of the early 1990s, Pearl Jam's members often shunned popular music industry practices such as making music videos or participating in interviews. The band had also sued Ticketmaster, claiming it had monopolized the concert-ticket market. Pearl Jam had sold more than 85 million albums worldwide, including nearly 32 million albums in the United States, making them one of the best-selling bands of all time. Pearl Jam was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2017 in its first year of eligibility.

'Demon Entrails' is a compilation album that comprises three demos by Hellhammer.

Celtic Frost was a Swiss metal band from Zurich formed in June 1984 by guitarist and vocalist Thomas Gabriel Fischer and bassist Martin Eric Ain after terminating the band Hellhammer a month prior. They are remembered for their strong influence on the development of several varieties of extreme metal and for their avant-garde approach to music more generally. After the release of 'Vanity/Nemesis' (1990), the group temporarily disbanded. They then re-formed in 2001 and released the critically acclaimed 'Monotheist' (2006), and finally disbanded permanently following Fischer's departure in 2008. His following band, Triptykon, was seen as a continuation of the legacy Celtic Frost had left.

Guitarists included Vivian Campbell, Craig Goldy, Doug Aldrich, Warren DeMartini, Tracy G, Jake E. Lee and Rowan Robertson. The band dissolved in 2010 when Ronnie James Dio died of stomach cancer at the age of 67. Thge band has sold has sold over 5 million records worldwide.

Vengeance Rising was an American Christian thrash metal band from Los Angeles, California. Fronted by vocalist Roger Martinez, they originally formed as Vengeance in 1987, but changed their name in 1989 to avoid conflict with another band from the Netherlands. Band members Larry Farkas, Doug Thieme, Roger Dale Martin, and Glen Mancaruso left following 'Once Dead' (1990) and formed the band Die Happy. Roger Martinez stayed on to record two more studio albums, but aside from him, Vengeance Rising's lineup changed for each subsequent album. While the group was a ground breaking Christian metal band, today Vengeance Rising is known for vocalist Martinez's turning from Christianity to Satanism to atheism.

Tourniquet was an American Christian metal band that formed in Los Angeles in 1990. It was founded by Ted Kirkpatrick, Guy Ritter, and Gary Lenaire. Tourniquet primarily played a mixture of thrash and progressive metal and was influenced by additional, non-rock forms of music such as classical and world music. The band earned six GMA Dove Award nominations and won multiple recognitions from the readers of HM Magazine, including Favorite Band Of The 1990s and Favorite Album Of The 1990s for Pathogenic Ocular Dissonance (1992). The band disbanded after Kirkpatrick's on August 19th, 2022 from idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.

Their beginnings can be traced back to the late 1960s, when the band got its start under the name Band X. Accept's lineup has changed over the years, which has included different singers, guitarists, bassists and drummers. Hoffmann is the last remaining original member, and the only band member to appear on each album. Accept played an important role in the development of speed and thrash metal, and they were part of the German heavy metal scene, which emerged in the early to mid-1980s.
