Smashing Pumpkins - Aghori Mhori Mei (2024)

And just like that it is 1993 again, and Smashing Pumpkins have released an album that is big and brash and in your face, and bursting with that big rock energy that made the world fall in love with them. Since their return from hiatus in 2007 Billy Corgan has lead the band through many different styles (including 80s inspired electro-pop and multi-volume space operas), with only some albums containing brief flickers of their early 90s distortion and attitude - but it was always just a tease leaving us wanting more. After a number of albums that left most long term fans cold, they have finally hit the mark with Aghori Mhori Mei, and produced something that easily stands alongside past glories. Opener 'Edin' smashes through the silence, and Billy's voice is commanding and adds weight to the music with tight production. 'Pentagrams' carries on the rock, with a crispness to the guitars that cuts like a knife. Leadoff single 'Sighommi' is a great representation of the album's sound, although it isn't the best song on offer here. There are gentler moments of course, like the graceful 'Penetcost', the orchestral backing driving the song forward. But these are few, and bookended with tracks like the pummelling 'War Dreams Of Itself' and 'Sicarus' is the sleeper song of the album, revealing its many layers slowly over multiple listens. 'Who Goes There' sounds like it could have been on any Pumpkins album from the 90's and '999' is dark and brooding animal, that sounds ready to strike at any moment. The album ends with the sombre 'Murnau', but a softer moment is needed to bring the crescendo to a close. More recent fans of the band that prefer their pop leanings may be scratching their heads on first listen to Aghori Mhori Mei, but old time fans will be left with a smile on their faces. Clocking in at 45ish minutes it isn't too long or too short, and it begs to be put on repeat for multipole play throughs. One can only guess what the band may do next?

Edge Of Sanity - Crimson (1996)

Straight up, this is an amazing album. Dano Swano is a genius and Mikael Akerfeldt is at his absolute growling and harmonic best. OK, I'll calm now and let you in on a record that is ground breaking. Not so much for its story and versatility in ups and downs in the tempo, but it is a single roughly 40 minute track. That is super hard to do I'd expect - keeping the listener engaged. And this is the beauty of the record. It starts off with hard and heavy approach to the song, followed by quiet interludes. But what is even better, it's not a verse/chorus/verse song. Instead replaced by different musical sounds but still maintain that grounded tempo and sound of the song from the first minute. It is so smart how it deviates away from that, but always brings you back to it eventually. The interludes that have non-growls from Swano are just perfection in their composition and again how this stitches together with the remainder of the song. I don't tend to delve too much into stories behind a song, but with this one I just had to know. A life where civilisation has lost the ability to reproduce, the King and Queen manage to buck this idea and produce a daughter. Mother dies during birth. King brings up daughter until he dies and then all hell breaks loose. You can actually see that in the song as you listen through the various stages. One last point to make - in times where we hardly have time to listen to a full album in a single listen, this album demands you do so, otherwise you won't experience the true masterpiece as it was to be enjoyed.

Power Trip

Thrash Metal (Crossover)

Power Trip is an American crossover thrash band formed in Dallas, Texas, in 2008. By 2020, Power Trip's lineup consisted of Riley Gale (lead vocals), Blake Ibanez (lead guitar), Nick Stewart (rhythm guitar), Chris Whetzel (bass) and Chris Ulsh (drums); the latter replaced drummer Marcus Johnson, who left in 2009. Their current singer is Seth Gilmore, who replaced Gale in 2023, more than three years after the latter's death. Power Trip was one of the most successful thrash metal bands of the 2010s, receiving a number of accolades by publications. A live version of the song "Executioner's Tax (Swing Of The Axe)" received a nomination for the Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance.

D'arcy Elizabeth Wretzky (born May 1, 1968) is an American musician. She was the original bassist of the alternative rock band the Smashing Pumpkins and is credited on their first six studio albums. She left the band in 1999. She has also been a member of Catherine and performed with Filter.

Dave Abbruzzese

David James Abbruzzese (born May 17, 1968) is an American musician who was the drummer for the American rock band Pearl Jam from 1991 to 1994. He replaced drummer Matt Chamberlain in 1991, shortly before the release of the band's debut album, 'Ten' (1991). Abbruzzese played on the band's following records, 'Vs' (1993). and 'Vitalogy' (1994).

Jimmy Chamberlin

James Joseph Chamberlin (born June 10, 1964) is an American drummer and record producer. Described as "one of the most powerful drummers in rock," he is best known as the drummer for the alternative rock band the Smashing Pumpkins. Following the 2000 breakup of the band, Chamberlin joined Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan in the supergroup Zwan and also formed his own group, Jimmy Chamberlin Complex.

Ipecac Recordings

Ipecac Recordings is an independent record label based in California. It was founded on April 1, 1999, by Greg Werckman (ex-label manager of Alternative Tentacles, ex-lead singer of DUH, ex-employee of Mercury Records) and Mike Patton (Faith No More, Mr. Bungle, Fantomas, Tomahawk, Peeping Tom, and Mondo Cane) in Alameda, California. Originally, the label was created for the sole purpose of releasing the first Fantomas album. It has since distributed music by artists such as Melvins, Oxbow and Isis, as well as several of Patton's other projects and collaborations.

The album also marks the band's return to recording as a five-piece after the previous album, 'Moment' (2020), was recorded as a six-piece.

Dark Tranquillity is a Swedish melodic death metal band from Gothenburg. They are considered one of the pioneering acts of the Gothenburg metal scene, which also includes bands such as In Flames and At The Gates. After a nearly three-decade long collaboration of four founding members frequent lineup changes between 2016 and 2021 have left only vocalist Mikael Stanne as an original member, together with long-time keyboardist Martin Brandstrom.

David Lombardo (born February 16, 1965) is a Cuban-American drummer, best known as a co-founding member of the thrash metal band Slayer. His drumming has been praised as "astonishingly innovative". Drummerworld named him "The Godfather of Double Bass". He has had a significant influence on the metal scene and inspired modern metal drummers, particularly extreme metal drummers.

Pearl Jam is an American rock band formed in Seattle, Washington, in 1990. Formed after the demise of guitarist Stone Gossard and bassist Jeff Ament's previous bands, Green River and Mother Love Bone, they broke into the mainstream with their debut album, 'Ten', in 1991. One of the key bands in the grunge movement of the early 1990s, Pearl Jam's members often shunned popular music industry practices such as making music videos or participating in interviews. The band had also sued Ticketmaster, claiming it had monopolized the concert-ticket market. Pearl Jam had sold more than 85 million albums worldwide, including nearly 32 million albums in the United States, making them one of the best-selling bands of all time. Pearl Jam was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2017 in its first year of eligibility.
