Hand Of Kalliach - Corryvreckan (2024)

[Death Metal (Melodic)]

United Kingdom

Rating - 4 Stars

The melodic death metal style has grown over the years, and morphed into a multi-headed hydra that may strike in many ways. As an analogy, a multi-headed hydra also works for the band Hand Of Kalliach. It is hard to nail them to one particular death metal style, but of the many heads this beast has, beauty is surprisingly one of them. Corryvreckan starts out quiet and builds slowly, and by mid first track 'Three Seas' is a symphonic cacophony. The band is a Scottish husband and wife duo, with haunting female vocals ethereally drifting across the music regardless of its force. This is on full display on 'Fell Reigns', with the growled gravel vocals offset by the beauty of the disembodied female voice. The guitar backing is crushingly heavy, but Scottish folk motives are played throughout giving this a timeless feeling. By 'Dioghaltas' the listener thinks they have this album nailed, but a brutally heavy straight up death metal track blasts that idea away, and yet somewhere buried in the mix those Scottish folk tunes are still playing away. It is an album that is hard to decipher at first, and constantly surprises (or maybe disappoints) as it twists and weaves through unpredictable timing changes and a mixture of styles. By track 6, it sounds like the album has found its heavy groove, but then 'The Hubris Of Prince Bhreacan' veers the ship toward the rocky waters of an almost gothic rock style, its serenity interrupted abruptly by the demonic growls. Although the album is heavily symphonic in places, it certainly isn't light in the slightest - with most of it brutally heavy and foreboding. It is a punishing listen in one sitting, and will require multiple listens to really sink in with even the final track 'Of Twilight And The Pyre' starting out pleasant but ending the album in a wall of brutal noise. This album won't be for everyone, and even hardened death metal veterans may struggle with the female backing and passages of serenity, but for those who do connect with it, it is a totally rewarding listen.

Rating - 3 Stars

The Cars would never have hit my radar as a band to listen to until I started my first job as a warehouse staff member in the local Woolworths on weekends. Back then the store manager got to select what music was played in the store during the day. Amongst others he had The Beach Boys and The Cars on constant repeat. From this point my interest in The Cars grew. I've chosen to review a 'best of' from them rather than a single album as this is what I have been familiar with. It could be argued however their first release, self-titled in 1978, encompasses the majority of their hit songs. To get direct to the point, it is straight up and down rock and roll music. I hate the term 'Easy Listening', however it is how you would describe The Cars - classic, catchy songs such as 'Let the Good Times Roll', 'My Best Friend's Girl', and even to their 80's work such as 'Tonight She Comes'. This compilation includes some songs I had not previously heard however are addictive in nature and you'll be singing the chorus before you know it. When I want a pick me up this release is one I lean on quite a bit.

'One Assassination Under God, Chapter 1' is the twelfth studio album by Marilyn Manson.

Marilyn Manson is an American rock band formed by namesake lead singer Marilyn Manson and guitarist Daisy Berkowitz in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, in 1989. Originally named Marilyn Manson & The Spooky Kids, they gained a local cult following in South Florida in the early 1990s with their theatrical live performances. In 1993, they were the first act signed to Trent Reznor's Nothing Records label. Until 1996, the name of each member was created by combining the first name of a female sex symbol and the last name of a male serial killer-for example, Marilyn Monroe and Charles Manson. Their lineup has changed between many of their album releases; the eponymous lead singer is the only remaining original member.

6 November 2012
Thrash Metal

'Countdown To Extinction [20th Anniversary Edition]' is a reissue of the fifth studio album by Megadeth. It features the original album remastered and a recording of the band's performance at San Francisco's Cow Palace in 1992, a show never before released in its entirety.

Megadeth is an American thrash metal band formed in Los Angeles in 1983 by vocalist/guitarist Dave Mustaine. Known for their technically complex guitar work and musicianship, Megadeth is one of the "big four" of American thrash metal along with Metallica, Anthrax, and Slayer, responsible for the genre's development and popularization. Their music features complex arrangements and fast rhythm sections, dual lead guitars, and lyrical themes of war, politics, religion, death, and personal relationships. In 1985, Megadeth released their debut album, 'Killing Is My Business... And Business Is Good!', on the independent record label Combat Records, to moderate success. It caught the attention of bigger labels, which led to Megadeth signing with Capitol Records. Their first major-label album, 'Peace Sells... But Who's Buying?', was released in 1986 and was a major hit with the underground metal scene. Band members' substance abuse issues and personal disputes had brought Megadeth negative publicity during the late 1980s. Nonetheless, the band went on to release a number of platinum-selling albums, including 'So Far, So Good... So What!' (1988), 'Rust In Peace' (1990), and 'Countdown To Extinction' (1992). Megadeth has undergone multiple lineup changes throughout its 41-year career, with Mustaine being the sole consistent member of the band. The band temporarily disbanded in 2002 when he suffered an arm injury and re-established in 2004 without longtime bassist David Ellefson, who had taken legal action against Mustaine. Ellefson settled out of court and rejoined the band in 2010, but was fired in 2021 amid allegations of sexual misconduct.

The guitar and bass tracks for Katorz had been recorded by D'Amour and bassist Jason Newsted (formerly of Metallica) on D'Amour's Mac at Newsted's house in California. When D'Amour would send the band a Pro Tools CD of the demos, he wrote 'Katorz' on it, a phonetic spelling of 'quatorze', the French word for fourteen.

'Killbox 13' is the twelfth studio album by Overkill. The name stems from the fact that the band considers this to be their thirteenth release because they include the Overkill E.P. (1985) as their first. It is the first album with rhythm guitarist Derek Tailer. It received much critical acclaim because some of the songs marked a return to the raw unpolished thrash style exhibited on the first album Feel The Fire, which Overkill had gradually moved away from afterwards.

Overkill is an American thrash metal band, formed in 1980 in New Jersey. Along with Nuclear Assault and Anthrax, the latter of whom would feature one-time Overkill lead guitarist Dan Spitz, the band is one of the most successful East Coast thrash metal bands, and they are often called 'the Motorhead of thrash metal', based on their unique playing style, which was influenced by punk rock and the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM). The band has sold over 16 million records worldwide; they are also estimated to have sold more than 625,000 records in the U.S. since the beginning of the SoundScan era.

Thrash Metal

'Killing Is My Business... And Business Is Good! [Remix & Remaster]' is a reissue of the debut studio album by Megadeth. The cover is redesigned to match Mustaine's original sketch, and the entire album is remixed and remastered to enhance the sound quality. It also includes the band's 1984 demo.

'Cuatro' (meaning 'four' in Spanish) is the fourth studio album by Flotsam And Jetsam. This was the band's first album with bassist Jason Ward, who had replaced Troy Gregory the year before. While Cuatro continued the experimentation with a progressive/technical sound that began on Flotsam And Jetsam's previous album, When The Storm Comes Down (1990), it saw them move to a rather slower, slightly more melodic approach. Similar to its predecessor, Cuatro's lyrical themes are more about politics and society as opposed to the occult and evil themes that were used on the band's first two albums. Chris Cornell of Soundgarden co-wrote 'The Message' and is credited as Christopher Cornell.

Flotsam And Jetsam is an American thrash metal band that was formed in Phoenix, Arizona, in 1981. Before settling on its current name in 1984, the band had existed under three different names, Paradox, Dredlox and Dogz. They are also notable for featuring a then-unknown Jason Newsted, who was the band's bassist from 1981 to 1986, when he left the band shortly after the release of their debut album to join Metallica. Gothic Metal

'Slow, Deep And Hard' is the debut studio album by Type O Negative. The album was originally titled None More Negative, and released in 1990 as a demo under the group's former name Repulsion.

Type O Negative was an American gothic metal/doom metal band formed in Brooklyn, New York City, U.S.A. in 1989. Their lyrical emphasis on themes of romance, depression, and death resulted in the nickname 'The Drab Four' (in homage to The Beatles' 'Fab Four' moniker). The band went platinum with 1993's Bloody Kisses, and gold with 1996's October Rust. Vocalist and bassist Pete Steele died on April 14, 2010, at the age of 48; some sources report the cause of death as heart failure brought on by an aortic aneurysm, while others list sepsis caused by diverticulitis. Seven months after Steele's death, the surviving members of Type O Negative announced that they would not continue as a band.

It was ranked first in the 1998 and 2000 editions of Colin Larkin's book All Time Top 1000 Albums and third in the 2003 and 2012 editions of Rolling Stone magazine's list of the "500 Greatest Albums Of All Time".
