Look Up

Ringo Starr - Look Up (2025)

As the Beatle with the least amount of writing credits and vocals performances to his name, Richard 'Ringo' Starkey has still managed to make a long and surprisingly prosperous career with limited talents in both those areas. He is of course an amazingly talented drummer, but that alone usually can't carry an artist. With many smart decisions and well-known special guests (other former Beatles included) he has managed to keep his music relevant to his fans. Look Up is a perfect example of this, sharply tilting away from rock to a more country-tinged affair. From the moment the acoustic opener 'Breathless' bursts through the silence it is obvious this is a different Ringo album than anything else in recent memory. Featuring bluegrass master Billy Talent on the strings, the song is both rich and sparse at the same time, the density coming from the feel rather than the instrumentation. The song will make you smile, and let's face it, that's all Ringo has ever really wanted us to do when listening to his music. Don't analyse it. Don't be critical of it. Just bob your head and smile. The title track has a bit more of a muscular punch to it, but is still light and fun, and it is clear that Ringo has worked hard to craft a set of tunes that his vocal range can compliment. 'Time On My Hands' and 'I Live For Your Love' are full country steel-string soaked ballads, and 'Never Let Me Go' feels like it could have its own boot-scootin' line-dance. 'Come Back', featuring indie stars Lucious on backing vocals, is about as deep into Texas as you can travel. 'Rosetta' lifts the album back out of a deep-south tavern, and puts a little more rock on the album's roll, and its placement is perfect to lift things. It all wraps up in a bow with 'Thankful', a largely forgettable track that is only really saved by the irresistible Allison Kraus sharing the vocals. At a smidge over 35 minutes long, the album is short - but it works at that length - and the production is smoother than an aged Kentucky Bourbon, making the album a very easy listen. This wasn't the first time Ringo had tried country as his second solo album way back in 1970 was also sporting the Nashville sound. Critics at the time noted how well the style fit his voice, and it seemed like he would return there in the future. Now that he has, we must wonder why he took so long?

OK, I won't got into the history about how a prestigious rap artist got to writing some rap/metal album which at the time caused some significant pushback, it was in fact the notoriety itself that put the band even further into the headlights and ultimate success with their very first album. It's very clear right from the first track the record was to be a message to whoever wants to listen, the treatment of native African Americans within U.S. society. Being mostly raised by his dad and being educated in South Central L.A., a place you really don't want to visit, Ice takes a little bit of time to set the scene with track one 'Smoked Pork'. It sets the scene to some extent but will not be what the entire album is about. Read on. The second track 'Body Counts In The House', is the most unique way I have seen to introduce all your band members. It is a winner and very enjoyable, particularly the solo's from Ernie C, for whom we would come to learn years later was part of the reason for forming the band. Oh and I just love Beatmaster V on the drums. It is a different sound in some ways, but if you saw him back in the day playing (he's now deceased) he was a sight to behold. For the next 10 minutes or so, the listener is treated to some short commentary / statistics. It's track 8 that suddenly hits the humour / cheap comedy side of Ice. 'K_K_K' and 'Voodoo' - while I like the tracks, they are a little cheesy. It's track 11 where you come across the masterpiece of the record. 'The Winner Loses'. A ballad if I dare say about the challenges of a young kid spiralling out of control in the drug scene. A not uncommon theme in many communities. Ice shows his soulful side and clearly is the highlight of the record. 'There Goes The Neighbourhood' is a perfect follow on and again does a great job of the disparity between whites and blacks. The remainder pans out with a few more slapstick songs, but enjoyable and catchy to me. The final song, that only was available on early pressings of the CD before the U.S. courts ordered for it to be removed, is the track 'Cop Killer'. Very direct in its intentions that didn't sit well with those that had the power to influence change. In some ways validating yet again the oppression and challenges the African American has trying to just live, even survive. All up one of my favourites, now over 30 years old, that I still enjoy listening to. Good to know they continued on but with some ups and downs. I'll get to those another time.

'The Lost Tapes, Vol. 6 (Live In Berlin 1992)' is the sixth in a series of archival live albums by Motorhead.

Motorhead were an English hard rock band formed in 1975 by bassist and lead vocalist Ian 'Lemmy' Kilmister, guitarist Larry Wallis and drummer Lucas Fox. Lemmy was also the primary songwriter and only constant member. The band are often considered a precursor to the new wave of British heavy metal (NWOBHM), which re-energised heavy metal in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Though several guitarists and drummers have played in Motorhead, most of their best-selling releases feature drummer Phil 'Philthy Animal' Taylor and guitarist 'Fast' Eddie Clarke. Lemmy died on 28 December 2015 from cardiac arrhythmia and congestive heart failure, after being diagnosed with prostate cancer. The day after his death, drummer Mikkey Dee and guitarist Phil Campbell both confirmed that Motorhead had disbanded.

'At Donington U.K. (Live 1983 & 1987)' is a live album from Dio. It features two appearances by the band at the Monsters Of Rock festival at Donington: the 1983 show and the 1987 show (from the Holy Diver and Dream Evil tours, respectively). In addition to his work with his own band, material from Ronnie James Dio's time in Black Sabbath and Rainbow is also showcased.

Dio was an American heavy metal band formed in 1982 and led by vocalist Ronnie James Dio after he left Black Sabbath with intentions to form a new band with fellow former Black Sabbath drummer Vinny Appice. The band released 10 studio albums and had numerous lineup changes over the years, with Dio himself being the only constant member. Guitarists included Vivian Campbell, Craig Goldy, Doug Aldrich, Warren DeMartini, Tracy G, Jake E. Lee and Rowan Robertson. The band dissolved in 2010 when Ronnie James Dio died of stomach cancer at the age of 67. Thge band has sold has sold over 5 million records worldwide.

'A Touch Of Evil, Live' is the fifth live album by Judas Priest. It is the first live album with original vocalist Rob Halford since the band reunited, and also the final Judas Priest production to feature guitarist K. K. Downing before his retirement in 2011. It was recorded during the band's 2005 and 2008 world tours. The track 'Dissident Aggressor', originally recorded for their 1977 album Sin After Sin, won the Grammy award for Best Metal Performance in 2010.

Judas Priest are an English heavy metal band formed in 1969. Rob Halford's operatic vocal style and the twin guitar sound of K.K. Downing and Glenn Tipton have been a major influence on many heavy metal bands. Judas Priest's image of leather, spikes, and other taboo articles of clothing was widely influential during the glam metal era of the 1980s. Despite an innovative and pioneering body of work in the latter half of the 1970s, the band struggled with indifferent record production and a lack of major commercial success until 1980, when the album 'British Steel' brought them notable mainstream attention. They have sold over 50 million albums and are frequently ranked as one of the greatest metal bands of all time.

Twisted Sister was an American heavy metal band formed in 1972, originally from Ho-Ho-Kus, New Jersey, and later based on Long Island, New York. The band evolved from a band named Silver Star, and experienced several membership changes before settling on the classic lineup in 1982. Their first two albums, 'Under The Blade' (1982) and 'You Can't Stop Rock 'n' Roll' (1983), were critically well-received and earned the band underground popularity, and thyey achieved mainstream success with their third album, 'Stay Hungry' (1984).

'Numbers From The Beast (An All Star Salute To Iron Maiden)' is a tribute album to Iron Maiden. It celebrated the band's 25th anniversary of the release of their debut album. The songs are performed by some of the leading names in heavy metal. The album is produced by Bob Kulick and Brett Chassen. The cover-art was made by Derek Riggs, creator of Maiden's mascot Eddie. Track three features former Iron Maiden lead vocalist Paul Di'Anno, who sang on the original version of the song.

Iron Maiden are an English heavy metal band formed in East London in 1975 by bassist and primary songwriter Steve Harris. Although fluid in the early years of the band, the line-up for most of the band's history has consisted of Harris, lead vocalist Bruce Dickinson, guitarists Dave Murray, Adrian Smith and Janick Gers, and drummer Nicko McBrain. As pioneers of the new wave of British heavy metal movement, Iron Maiden released a series of UK and US Platinum and Gold albums, including 1980's debut album, 1981's 'Killers', and 1982's 'The Number Of The Beast'. In fact, 'The Number Of The Beast' is among the most popular heavy metal albums of all time, having sold almost 20 million copies worldwide and the band's first album with Bruce Dickinson, who replaced Paul Di'Anno as lead singer in 1981. The addition of Dickinson was a turning point in their career.

'Hellalive' is the first live album by Machine Head. The album was released to fulfill Machine Head's commitment to Roadrunner Records. Former Vio-lence guitarist Phil Demmel is present on two songs, in place of Ahrue Luster, due to these songs being taken from 2002's Full Force Festival and by that time Luster had left the band. Demmel filled in, as is credited in the liner notes, and he later joined the band as permanent lead guitarist. As of 2012 the album has sold over 38,000 copies in the United States and an estimated 78,000 copies worldwide since its 2003 release.

Machine Head is an American heavy metal band from Oakland, California, U.S.A. The band was formed in 1991 by vocalist/rhythm guitarist Robb Flynn, who remains the only original member of the band. Machine Head's aggressive musicianship made it one of the pioneering bands in the new wave of American heavy metal. Having experimented with elements of groove metal and nu metal in its early releases, Machine Head changed to a more traditional thrash metal sound and longer songs with its sixth album, The Blackening (2007), which drew critical acclaim and was chosen as Album of the Decade by Metal Hammer in 2010. As of 2013, the band has sold over three million records worldwide.

'Sonic Brew is the debut studio album by Black Label Society (laeled as 'Zakk Wylde's Black Label Society'). It was originally released on 28 October 1998 in Japan only, in a rough mix. It was later re-released in 1999 more widely in a new mix. Unlike the albums that followed, this album still possessed a distinct Southern rock overtone that up to this time had predominated Zakk Wylde's solo writing style. Subsequently, the Johnnie Walker whisky company issued a cease-and-desist order to Wylde on the album cover, which had been designed to match, except for its wording, the distiller's graphic design for its bottles of Black Label Whisky. The band decided to reissue the album with a different album cover, this time merely the band's skull logo.

Black Label Society is an American heavy metal band formed in Los Angeles in 1998 by guitarist/singer Zakk Wylde.

Napalm Death are an English grindcore band formed in Meriden, West Midlands in 1981. The band is credited as pioneers of the grindcore genre by incorporating elements of crust punk and death metal, using a noise-filled sound that uses distorted, down-tuned guitars, grinding overdrive bass, high-speed tempo, blast beats, vocals that consist of incomprehensible growls or high-pitched shrieks, extremely short songs, and sociopolitical lyrics. The band's debut album 'Scum', released in 1987, proved substantially influential throughout the global metal community. According to the Guinness World Records, their song "You Suffer" is the shortest song ever recorded, at 1.316 seconds long.

'In The Shadows' is the third full-length studio album by Mercyful Fate. It is the first offering of the band since their reunion in 1992. This would be the final full-length album Timi Hansen would appear on before his death in 2019. Unlike previous Mercyful Fate albums, which were entirely centered around lyrical themes of Satanism and the occult, the lyrics on this album are rather focused on more conceptual horror-themes, akin to King Diamond's work with his eponymous band. The band would return to a primarily occult/Satanic lyrical approach the following year on the album Time album released in 1994.

Mercyful Fate is a Danish heavy metal band from Copenhagen, formed in 1981 by vocalist King Diamond and guitarist Hank Shermann. Influenced by progressive rock and hard rock, and with lyrics dealing with LaVeyan Satanism (often with ironic or sardonic use of Christian themes) and the occult, Mercyful Fate was part of the first wave of black metal in the early to mid-1980s, along with Venom and Bathory. The band is also cited as a formative influence on many then-up-and-coming subgenres of heavy metal, including thrash metal and death metal, as well as the Norwegian black metal scene.

'Brain Drain' is the eleventh studio album by Ramones. It is their last release to feature bassist/songwriter/vocalist Dee Dee Ramone, the first to feature Marky Ramone since his initial firing from the band after 1983's Subterranean Jungle and the band's last studio album on Sire Records.

Ramones were an American punk rock band formed in the New York City neighborhood Forest Hills, Queens in 1974. Known for helping establish the punk movement in the United States, the Ramones are often cited as the first true punk band. Though achieving little commercial success, the band is seen today as highly influential in punk culture. In 1996, after a tour with the Lollapalooza music festival, they played a farewell concert in Los Angeles and disbanded. They are ranked number 26 in Rolling Stone magazine's list of the "100 Greatest Artists Of All Time" and number 17 in VH1's "100 Greatest Artists Of Hard Rock". In 2002, Ramones were ranked the second-greatest band of all time by Spin, trailing only The Beatles.

The album peaked at No. 5 on the Kent Music Report Albums Chart, it was certified double platinum and ranked No. 21 for 1988 in Australia.

Choirboys are an Australian hard rock and Australian pub rock band from Sydney formed in 1979. Their 1987 single "Run To Paradise" remains their biggest commercial success.

At the tour's conclusion, Pop and Bowie regrouped in Berlin to record the former's next solo album.

The album followed the break-up of Pop's band the Stooges in 1974 and a period of drug addiction for both Pop and Bowie, after which the two moved to Europe in an effort to kick their addictions.
