'Nobody's Daughter' is the fourth and final studio album by Hole. The album was initially conceived as a solo project and follow-up to Hole frontwoman Courtney Love's first solo record, America's Sweetheart (2004). At the urging of her friend and former producer Linda Perry, Love began writing material while in a lockdown rehabilitation center in 2005 following a protracted cocaine addiction and numerous related legal troubles. In 2006, Love, along with Perry and Billy Corgan, began recording the album, which at that time was tentatively titled How Dirty Girls Get Clean. Following a number of live performances of the new songs between 2006 and 2007, Love decided to scrap the project, and began writing new material with guitarist Micko Larkin, who had joined her backing band in 2007. In mid-2009, it was announced that the album, retitled Nobody's Daughter, would be released as a Hole record, with guitarist Larkin, bassist Shawn Dailey, and drummer Stu Fisher as members. Before the album's release, former Hole guitarist Eric Erlandson publicly disputed Love's use of the Hole name, claiming it violated a previous agreement between the two, which Love contested. On its release, Nobody's Daughter received generally mixed reviews from music critics, with some praising its instrumentation and lyrics, while others criticized it for its folk rock elements as well as production issues and Love's vocals. Despite this, Love said in 2010 that she considered it the best record she had made.

'America's Sweetheart' is the debut studio album by Courtney Love. Her first official release after her former band Hole's break-up, the album's sound diverged significantly in musical and lyrical content to Hole's three previous studio albums. The recording process of the album began in summer 2001 in Los Angeles, California, however, was affected drastically by a number of personal and legal issues by Love; including her drug problems, the disbandment of Hole, the controversy surrounding Nirvana's upcoming box set, and legal problems with various record labels. Following recording, America's Sweetheart was further delayed due to Virgin's insistence on multiple changes to the songs and artwork. Upon its release, it received little promotion, and received mixed reviews. It was a commercial failure, selling 86,000 copies in its first three months, and with Love further citing the album as 'a mistake'.

'Celebrity Skin' is the third studio album by Hole. It was the last album released by the band before their dissolution in 2002. Hole intended for the record to diverge significantly from their previous noise and grunge-influenced sound as featured on Pretty On The Inside (1991) and Live Through This (1994). The band hired producer Michael Beinhorn to record Celebrity Skin over a nine-month period that included sessions in Los Angeles, New York City, and London. It was the band's only studio release to feature bassist Melissa Auf der Maur. Drummer Patty Schemel played on the demos for the album but was replaced by session drummer Deen Castronovo at the suggestion of Beinhorn. This issue created a rift between Schemel and the band, resulting in her dropping out of the tour and parting ways with the group, though she was still credited. Unlike Hole's previous releases, the final songs on Celebrity Skin featured instrumental contributions from several musicians outside the band, primarily Billy Corgan, who co-wrote the musical arrangements on five songs. Auf der Maur's former bandmate Jordon Zadorozny, as well as Go-Go's guitarist Charlotte Caffey, also contributed to the composition of one track. It is Hole's most commercially successful album. It peaked at number nine on the US Billboard 200, number four on the Australian Albums Chart, and number 11 on the U.K. Albums Chart. To date, it has sold over 1.4 million copies in the United States alone, has been certified as double-platinum in Australia by the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA), and platinum in Canada by Music Canada (MC) and the United States by Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). Critical reaction to the album was very positive and it was listed on a number of publications' year-end lists in 1998, including those by Time and The Village Voice. The album was named the 265th greatest album of all time by a 2013 poll by NME magazine and was featured in the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die.

'Live Through This' is the second studio album by Hole. Recorded in late 1993, it departed from the band's unpolished hardcore aesthetics to more refined melodies and song structure. The album was produced by Sean Slade and Paul Q. Kolderie and mixed by Scott Litt and J Mascis. The lyrics and packaging reflect Love's thematic preoccupations with beauty, and motifs of milk, motherhood, anti-elitism, and violence against women, while Love derived the album title from a quote in Gone With The Wind (1939). It was met with critical acclaim, and charted in nine countries before being certified platinum in the U.S. in April 1995. Despite this, it was also the subject of some public discussion regarding unsubstantiated rumors that Love's husband, Kurt Cobain - who died by suicide one week before the album's release - helped ghostwrite the album. This claim has been disputed by the band members, producers, as well as music biographers, though the band confirmed that Cobain sang additional backing vocals on two tracks during a visit to the studio. It was also the only Hole album to feature bassist Kristen Pfaff, and the final album to be released during her lifetime, as she died two months after the album's release. In critical circles, Live Through This is considered a contemporary classic, and was included in Rolling Stone's 2020 updated list of The 500 Greatest Albums Of All Time at number 106. It has also been featured in the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die and was ranked number 84 on NME's The 500 Greatest Albums Of All Time list. As of 2010, it has sold over 1.6 million copies in the U.S.
