Sex Pistols - Never Mind The Bollocks, Here's The Sex Pistols (1977)

To say the Sex Pistols debut album exploded onto the music buying public in October 1978 would be an understatement. The band were already well beyond notorious, having been banned from various venues causing tour cancellations. They had already been dropped by label E.M.I. after guitarist Steve Jones called morning show host Bill Grundy a 'fucking rotter' live on national television. They had already been dropped by label A&M after the band threatened one of the label heads with violence, causing thousands of copies of their second single to be destroyed before they even hit the shelves. They had also by this point fired bassist Glen Matlock (the most musical of the four band members) and replaced him with the totally incompetent (but undoubted more 'punk') Sid Vicious. Virgin Records finally picked up the bill for an album, and the band finally captured their lightning in a bottle on vinyl. All this was of course playing out as newspaper front page headlines, partially because it made great news, but also because the abhorrent behaviour of these four young musicians was unheard of in 'civilised' English society. Musically the album is tame in comparison to some of the harder styles of punk seen today, but regardless it is still a classic that not only drove a well needed sea-change in the late 1970s musical landscape, but also spearhead a change in the collective thinking of the youth of the U.K. at the time. In fact, the band was so despised by the mainstream media that when they topped the U.K. singles and album charts the space on the chart where they should have been listed was just left blank - as if to say the band didn't even exist as far as the public were concerned. The album bursts out the speakers with 'Holidays In The Sun' hooking the listener immediately with Johnny Rotten's tuneless (but engaging) snarl, and his mentions of Nazi's and communism - all very much taboo in post-war England - pull you even closer into his deranged world views. 'Bodies', easily the most boisterous song the original line-up ever recorded, is a graphic novel about abortion that uses more expletives than the average music fan in 1978 was used to hearing. That said though, nothing from Rotten's mouth is for shock value alone. His words are carefully placed and timed to provoke thought. He may have often acted like a uncaged orangutang in public, but he knew that his words carried wisdom to those young enough to understand them. The controversial 'God Save The Queen' is a punk rock classic that has never been matched, and almost had Rotten up on charges for crimes against the empire - at that point still punishable by death. It is a perfect template that every punk band since has built upon. Although the establishment of 1978 would have you believe this 'music' was just noise, the songs are actually incredibly catchy, and you'll be singing 'I'm a lazy sod!' along with the band by 'Seventeen'. The songs conjure images in your mind's eye of the fashions of the period, and you immediately imagine the red-headed Rotten leaning forward toward the crowd with his signature crazed grin while Jonesy stands spread-eagled behind him, Les Paul in hand, playing his working man's chords - all the while dodging spit from the pogoing audience. The chugging 'Anarchy In The U.K.' is placed mid-way, and reminds us of the bend's message of anarchy. As their first single it was a message of intent - here it more a reminder to you as you pour another pint of lager. And lager it must be, as although this is as unhinged as music could be in the late 1970s there is still a feeling of Britishness here, of that staunch stiff upper lip. Even those on the brink of rebellion can't quite rebel without a break for a cup of tea at the local vicar's house on the way to oblivion. 'Pretty Vacant' continues the classics, and this is a song that transcends its time and place. It's a song that exemplifies rock and rock and not just this disgruntled generation, but ever disgruntled generation for the rest of time. It is the voice of youth, and should only ever be that way. The band wraps everything up with their ode to record companies with 'E.M.I', and it is a great closer. At under 40 minutes the album is short - but it should be, as this isn't just a musical expression, but a time capsule of a short moment in history where the youth actually created a voice for themselves that was so loud that their mums and dads paid attention. It has to be asked though, did anything actually change because of it?

I thought it was time to have some fun by reviewing a band that impersonates and mashes up such classic bands as The Beatles and Metallica. Yes that's right, Metallica singing Beatles songs mashed with Metallica songs. And let me tell you the mash up is absolutely brilliant. Brought to us by Jaymez Lennfield, Grg Hammerston, Kliff McBurtney and Ringo Larz. Some very creative minds behind this band in general and more-so this release which I think is the pinnacle of their talent. Up to this they had a couple of E.P.s to test the waters I guess before this being their first full length. Starting a listen to the first track which is the title track, you hear Lennfield kick off which is a brilliant parody of Hetfield's vocal style. It's a quick 2 minute song which is the case for half the songs on the record. I'm not going to do track by track so you get a sense of the track names and the melding of the title between Beatles and Metallica songs. Simple to say it is incredibly creative. I do have to pick out a few tracks that are my favourite. 'Blackened In The U.S.S.R.' - starts with the Blackend intro which is brilliant, then takes a Beatles turn singing to Back in the USSR. 'Sandman' very similar in the intro, then turns into the 'Taxman' type sound. Brilliant. 'A Garage Dayz Night', which you can guess which Beatles song this is linked to, with a short reference to 'Wherever I May Roam'. 'Anesthesia (I'm Only Sleeping)' where you have to ask in what right mind would you link this classic Cliff solo to the 'Happy Birthday' song? You have to hear it to believe it. My favourite on the record is clearly 'Hey Dude'. This is the flip where a Beatles song is the base for the song and Jude is changed to Dude. Thy rhyming lyrics in the song are genius. Extremely clever work. 'Remember that metal is in your heart, then you can start, to become a shredder.' There has been some releases since but with less to work with compared to a 2007 release where they had 30 years of Metallica to work with, they haven't been as creative as this release. Take a listen if you still want to hear from your favourite bands but not in a corny way.

He was inducted into the Modern Drummer Hall Of Fame in 2009. In 2016, Mitchell was ranked number 8 in Rolling Stone magazine's list of the '100 Greatest Drummers Of All Time'.

Noel Redding

Noel David Redding (25 December 1945 - 11 May 2003) was an English rock musician, best known as the bass player for The Jimi Hendrix Experience and guitarist/singer for Fat Mattress. Following his departure from the Experience in 1969 and the dissolution of Fat Mattress in 1970, Redding formed the short-lived group Road in the United States, which released the self-titled album Road before he re-located to Clonakilty, Ireland, in 1972. There he formed the Noel Redding Band with former Thin Lizzy guitarist Eric Bell, with whom he released two albums. Although by the 1980s Redding had largely removed himself from the music business, he would later perform around his new hometown with wife Carol Appleby. He was inducted into The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in 1992 as a member of The Jimi Hendrix Experience.

ABKCO

ABKCO (Allen and Betty Klein Co) was founded in 1961 as an artist management company. Allen Klein was a controversial American business manager specializing in music clients including Bobby Darin and Sam Cooke and, later, managed The Rolling Stones and The Beatles. ABKCO rarely releases new music, instead it re-releases recordings from the vast pool of music rights it owns. Allen Klein bought Cameo-Parkway Records in 1968 and it still owns the full catalogue of this label today. ABKCO also owns and/or administers the rights to music by Sam Cooke, The Rolling Stones, The Animals, Herman's Hermits, Marianne Faithfull and The Kinks.

Atlantic Records

Atlantic Recording Corporation (simply known as Atlantic Records) is an American record label founded in October 1947 by Ahmet Ertegun and Herb Abramson. Over the course of its first two decades, starting from the release of its first recordings in January 1948, Atlantic earned a reputation as one of the most important American labels, specializing in jazz, R&B, and soul by Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles, Wilson Pickett, Sam and Dave, Ruth Brown and Otis Redding. Its position was greatly improved by its distribution deal with Stax. In 1967, Atlantic became a wholly owned subsidiary of Warner Bros.-Seven Arts, now the Warner Music Group, and expanded into rock and pop music with releases by Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, Led Zeppelin, and Yes. In 2004, Atlantic and its sister label Elektra were merged into the Atlantic Records Group. Ahmet Ertegun served as founding chairman until his death on December 14, 2006, at age 83.

Epic Records

Epic Records is an American record label owned by Sony Music Entertainment, a subsidiary of Sony Corporation of America, the American division of Japanese conglomerate Sony. The label was founded predominantly as a jazz and classical music label in 1953, but later expanded its scope to include a more diverse range of genres, including pop, R&B, rock, and hip-hop.

Season Of Mist

Season Of Mist is an independent record label and record distributor with subsidiaries in France and the United States. The record label was founded in 1996 by Michael S. Berberian in Marseille, France. From the start releasing black metal, pagan metal, and death metal records, the label moved on to releasing albums of avant-garde metal, gothic metal and punk bands as well. The label has two offices, one in Marseille, France and one in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Located in Hammersmith, London, it is an art deco Grade listed building.

Metro (formerly the 'Stages Music Hall' and 'Cabaret Metro') is a concert hall in Chicago, Illinois, United States, that plays host to a variety of local, regional and national emerging bands and musicians. The Metro was first opened in 1982. The capacity is 1,100, divided between the main floor and the balcony. The building housing Metro also houses Smart Bar underneath the main venue.

Pearl Jam is an American rock band formed in Seattle, Washington, in 1990. Formed after the demise of guitarist Stone Gossard and bassist Jeff Ament's previous bands, Green River and Mother Love Bone, they broke into the mainstream with their debut album, 'Ten', in 1991. One of the key bands in the grunge movement of the early 1990s, Pearl Jam's members often shunned popular music industry practices such as making music videos or participating in interviews. The band had also sued Ticketmaster, claiming it had monopolized the concert-ticket market. Pearl Jam had sold more than 85 million albums worldwide, including nearly 32 million albums in the United States, making them one of the best-selling bands of all time. Pearl Jam was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2017 in its first year of eligibility.

'Another Perfect Day [40th Anniversary Edition]' is an album reissue by Motorhead. It contains the original album remastered, a collection of demos and outtakes, and complete concert from the period.

Motorhead were an English hard rock band formed in 1975 by bassist and lead vocalist Ian 'Lemmy' Kilmister, guitarist Larry Wallis and drummer Lucas Fox. Lemmy was also the primary songwriter and only constant member. The band are often considered a precursor to the new wave of British heavy metal (NWOBHM), which re-energised heavy metal in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Though several guitarists and drummers have played in Motorhead, most of their best-selling releases feature drummer Phil 'Philthy Animal' Taylor and guitarist 'Fast' Eddie Clarke. Lemmy died on 28 December 2015 from cardiac arrhythmia and congestive heart failure, after being diagnosed with prostate cancer. The day after his death, drummer Mikkey Dee and guitarist Phil Campbell both confirmed that Motorhead had disbanded.

'Standing On The Outside, The Songs Of Cold Chisel' is a tribute album dedicated to the songs of Cold Chisel. The album features 18 songs recorded by Australian and New Zealand artists. The album peaked at number 2 on the ARIA Charts and was certified platinum.

Cold Chisel are an Australian pub rock band, which formed in Adelaide in 1973. The group disbanded in late 1983 but subsequently reformed several times. Musicologist Ian McFarlane wrote that they became "one of Australia's best-loved groups" as well as "one of the best live bands", fusing "a combination of rockabilly, hard rock and rough-house soul'n'blues that was defiantly Australian in outlook." Cold Chisel's popularity is almost entirely confined to Australia and New Zealand, with their songs and musicianship highlighting working class life.

'Under Cover' is the ninth studio album by Ozzy Osbourne. The album consists entirely of cover songs, with an emphasis on rock music from the 1960s and 1970s. All but four songs were originally released in the box set Prince Of Darkness, released earlier the same year. It is the only Osbourne album to feature the work of Alice in Chains' guitarist Jerry Cantrell or bassist Chris Wyse.

John Michael 'Ozzy' Osbourne is an English hard rock and heavy metal vocalist. He rose to prominence during the 1970s as part of the band Black Sabbath, during which period he adopted the nickname 'Prince Of Darkness'. Osbourne was fired from Black Sabbath in 1979 due to alcohol and drug problems. He then began a successful solo career with 'Blizzard Of Ozz' in 1980, and his the first seven albums went on to receive multi-platinum certifications in the U.S. He has since reunited with Black Sabbath on several occasions. Osbourne has sold over 100 million albums, including his solo work and Black Sabbath releases.

The album captures the taping of their ill-fated 1968 TV special, which was not broadcast until almost three decades later. It is the fifth release of The Rolling Stones music by former manager Allen Klein's ABKCO Records (who gained control of the band's Decca material in 1970) after the band's departure from Decca and Klein.

In the early 1960s, the band pioneered the gritty, rhythmically driven sound that came to define hard rock. 'Flesh And Wood' is the seventh album by Jimmy Barnes. It was recorded by Barnes and Don Gehman co-producing and used only acoustic instruments. On eight of its fifteen tracks, Barnes duets with various artists such as Diesel, Archie Roach, Joe Cocker, Ross Wilson, Tommy Emmanuel, Don Walker, Deborah Conway, and The Badloves. It reached No. 2 on the ARIA Albums Chart.

James Dixon Barnes AO (ne Swan; born 28 April 1956) is a Scottish-born Australian rock singer. His career, both as a solo performer and as the lead vocalist with the rock band Cold Chisel, has made him one of the most popular and best-selling Australian music artists of all time. He has achieved 15 solo number-one albums in Australia, more than any other artist. Additionally, he achieved five more as the lead singer of Cold Chisel, bringing his combined sum to 20 number-one albums in Australia, comfortably eclipsing The Beatles (with 14), Madonna and Taylor Swift (12), Eminem and U2 (11).
