Michael Schenker Group - Don't Sell Your Soul (2025)

[Hard Rock]

United Kingdom

Rating - 3 Stars

Michael Schenker has never been a guy short on music, and with Michael Shenker Group, his solo work, and all the other projects he devotes time to, he has proven the well is far from running dry. This album is another worthy addition to his legacy, but not one that will change it. It is a pretty standard 2020's Schenker product, and possibly suffers for exactly that reason - it is a little too standard, and ultimately predictable. The majority of the album's vocals are handed by Eric Gronwall, recently exited from Skid Row. There are also appearances from Robin McAuley and Michael Voss (who have both crossed paths with Schenker many times over the years), and the power metal vocals of Roberto Dimitri Liapakis even show up. All seasoned veterans as vocalists, and appearing on hundreds of albums - they were an easy choice to include. Mixing up the vocals is a nice touch, and are really the only moments of surprise on the album, as musically is doesn't have much that longtime fans haven't heard before. Opener 'Don't Sell Your Soul' grooves with an Iron Maiden style gallop, but is ultimately quite restrained musically and vocally for an opener. The understated but very smooth solo (really Schenker's signature style), catches interest, and helps the songs to be a repeat listen grower. 'Danger Zone' is similar, in that it doesn't jump out the speakers, instead rumbling low, like an idling engine. As always, the solo is perfectly placed, but overall it doesn't really pop as the second track on the album. Track 3, 'Eye Of The Storm' allows the album to start stretching it's legs, and is more in the usual Schenker style. It has a distinctly 80's neoclassical feel in places, and McAuley's vocals sound like it is 1985 again. Depending on what you are looking for, this feels more like the album fans are here to listen to. 'Janey The Fox' is a slower modern sounding song, that is again slick - and not very memorable. Every album needs breathing room, but it hadn't felt like it had really opened up enough yet to warrant it this early. 'I Can't Stand Waiting' is another mid-paced track, and doesn't feel like much of a stretch for any of the musicians here. A guitarist like Schenker surely could not be challenged by songs this simple? Much like 'Eye Of Storm' earlier, 'Sign Of The Times' has a distinctly 80s sound - and the album is so much better for it. At this point it is obvious that Schenker is looking to keep his sound fresh and modern, but the songs here that have more of a throwback style or riff are actually where the album shines the most. Modern doesn't have to mean simple, and artists like Wolfgang Van Halen have proven with his Mammoth WVH band that you can use throwbacks in modern songs and still keep things sounding fresh. The solo here is one of the best on the album, and is so distinctly Schenker that you hear the entire history of his discography revealed to your ears. He even puts in a second one just as sublime later in the track. The most successful of the modern sounding tracks is the speedy 'Flash And Bone', showing that by adding a hook, the song can be infinitely better. 'Surrender' drives the album to a close, and is one of the best tracks on display. Gronwall carries the vocals well, but doesn't really push himself hard, and the song could have used the pipes of someone like Jeff Scott Soto to really lift it. Overall, it is a pleasant listen, and although it won't break into any Top 5 Schenker albums lists anytime soon, it is still worth spending time with. It does beg the question though, is Michael Schenker, now in his 70s, looking to play it fairly safe from here on? He has earned the right to coast if he wants to, but there are hints throughout this album that by pushing himself slightly harder these songs could benefit from some sharper edges.

'Tokyo Dome, Live In Concert' is the second live album by Van Halen. It is their first live album with original lead vocalist David Lee Roth and second live album overall after 1993's Live Right Here, Right Now. It is the final Van Halen album released during Eddie Van Halen's lifetime.

Van Halen was an American rock band formed in Pasadena, California, U.S.A. in 1973. Credited with restoring hard rock to the forefront of the music scene, Van Halen was known for their energetic live performances and the virtuosity of their guitarist, Eddie Van Halen. From 1974 to 1985, Van Halen consisted of Eddie Van Halen, his brother, drummer Alex Van Halen, lead vocalist David Lee Roth, and bassist Michael Anthony. In 1985, Roth left the band to embark on a solo career and was replaced by former Montrose lead vocalist Sammy Hagar. With Hagar, the group released four U.S. number-one, multi-platinum albums over the course of 11 years. Roth returned in 2006, and Anthony was replaced on bass guitar by Eddie's son, Wolfgang Van Halen. Eddie was diagnosed with cancer in 2001, and died of the disease on October 6, 2020. A month after his father's death, Wolfgang confirmed that Van Halen had disbanded. As of March 2019, Van Halen is 20th on the RIAA's list of best-selling artists in the United States; the band has sold 56 million albums in the U.S. and more than 80 million worldwide, making them one of the best-selling groups of all time.

A Different Kind Of Truth

Hard Rock

'A Different Kind Of Truth' is the twelfth and final studio album by Van Halen. It is Van Halen's only studio album on Interscope Records and its first full-length album of studio material with lead singer David Lee Roth since 1984. Likewise, it was Van Halen's first studio album since 1998's Van Halen III, as well as their only studio album recorded without bassist Michael Anthony, who had played bass on all of the band's previous albums; Eddie Van Halen's son Wolfgang replaced Anthony for the album, making this his only studio album with the band. It would also be Van Halen's final studio album before Eddie's passing and the group's subsequent disbandment in 2020.

Classic Rock

'Tusk' is the twelfth studio album by the Fleetwood Mac. It is considered more experimental than their previous albums, partly as a consequence of Lindsey Buckingham's sparser songwriting arrangements and the influence of post-punk. The production costs were initially estimated to be about $1 million but many years later were revealed to be about $1.4 million (equivalent to $6.07 million in 2024), making it the most expensive rock album recorded to that date. Compared to 1977's Rumours, which sold ten million copies by February 1978, Tusk was regarded as a commercial failure by the label, selling four million copies.

Fleetwood Mac are a British-American rock band formed in London in 1967 by ex-Bluesbreakers members guitarist and singer Peter Green and drummer Mick Fleetwood. Primarily a British blues band in their early years, the band achieved their first U.K. number one single in 1968 with the instrumental 'Albatross'.

10 January 1964
Classic Rock

'Introducing...' is the first studio album released by The Beatles in the United States. Originally scheduled for a July 1963 release, the L.P. came out on 10 January 1964, on Vee-Jay Records, ten days before Capitol's Meet The Beatles! The latter album, however, entered the U.S. album chart one week before the former. It was the subject of much legal wrangling, but ultimately, Vee-Jay was permitted to sell the album until late 1964, by which time it had sold more than 1.3 million copies. On 24 July 2014 the album was certified gold and platinum by the RIAA.
