Goliath

Exodus - Goliath (2026)

[Thrash Metal]

Album number 13 from Exodus, their first in 5 years, feels genuine and emotional. Goliath's biggest strength is variation - whilst most recent Exodus albums had a collection of songs at a similar tempo and style, the album opens itself up to some variations. It has some songs that reach back into earlier Exodus albums for inspiration, and some others that are a totally new direction for the band. It is more accessible than most of their recent output, and not due to the heaviness, but moreso due to a balanced production that does pit every instrument against the others in a battle of who can sound loudest. Production was handled by the band themselves, instead of the much over-used Andy 'wall of sound' Sneap. Make no mistake though, many of these tracks will still cause brain damage when listened to over long periods of time at high volume. It is also great to see that some of the songs were penned by second guitarist Lee Altus, instead of this being a 100% Gary Holt led album. It adds to the variation, and Altus has been involved with the band for long enough now to understand the Exodus DNA. Rob Dukes is back on vocals for the first time since 2014, and his voice hasn't changed much, although his vocals are a lot more restrained here - not using so much of the hardcore 'bark' he was known for, but instead attempting some variations to his vocals in a number of places. This also helps to expose the songs as individual entities that live in their own worlds, rather than blending into the album as a whole. '3111' is an odd opener, not for its subject matter (with 3,111 being the number of recorded Mexican drug cartel murders), but due to it not really having a chorus or hook. It builds slowly, and when it hits its stride it holds interest, but then trails off into a lengthy segue to the next song. It does work, but feels a little unfinished (or maybe 'unresolved' is a better word?). 'Hostis Humani Generis' feels like the first 'proper' song of the album, and with its crazy fast riffing it takes the prize for the most maniacal song on the album. The chorus has an old-school feel, but the rest of the track is a nod to the Shovel Headed Kill Machine era, with its reckless energy. 'The Changing Me' opens in a very un-Exodus way, and as the song unfurls it has a very euro-metal feel - even the chorus is very different to anything the band has done before and the breakdown prior to the solo almost sounds like In Flames or similar. Swedish death metal icon Peter Tagtgren adds a death metal growl to the chorus, which also revels something new in band's bag of tricks - a melody line behind the main riff that is very common with younger bands. Any old school fan will notice 'Promise You This' amongst the others within moments of it starting. The style is very much Exodus of the Fabulous Disaster era, with a great riff ratcheting away behind a chord line. Everything from the tempo to the style of solo drips a time in the past, and whether intentionally or not Holt has channeled a younger version of himself here. The solo in fact deserves a second mention, as it will raise many an air guitar from metal heads everywhere. The chorus is so catchy you will actually sing (growl?) along to it. Remember The Toxic Waltz? This is what it would sound like if written today. The title track is a lumbering monster, and Goliath is not only its name but also a great way to describe it. Moving at a doom metal pace, the chorus has a soaring guitar lead that sounds like Skwisgaar Skwigelf from Dethklok have been called in to assist. Buried in the mix (and probably too low) is violinist Katie Jacoby adding some flavour to the sound. 'Beyond The Event Horizon' is more of a typical modern sounding Exodus barnstormer, and is probably the track that would most easily fit onto any other recent Exodus album. Having said that though, it is still carried by a great lead riff that was often missing from other recent efforts. If any track on the album was to be called filler, it would be '2 Minutes Hate'. It isn't all forgettable though, with a solo that is excellent. 'Violence Works' is a slower grinder that starts off feeling a bit like a retread over older material, but although it never reaches close to some of the best songs on the album it does have some unexpected twists and turns. The chorus also allows Dukes a chance to sing in a higher register, and you realise that the vocal variations he makes throughout the album are as integral to its success as some of the changes Holt has made to his writing style. The album's longest song (and arguably unnecessarily so) is 'Summon Of The God Unknown', which is another slow chugger. It does somehow stay interesting though, moving through a number of riffs sooner rather than later. Just when the listener expects to be settling in for something predicable, it does keep you on your toes more than anticipated. About half way the song unexpectedly changes gears and almost turns into a different animal altogether, making this more like two songs than one. It has a massive closing chug that feels absolute at its resolve. Although it feels like a natural ending the album does have one more surprise in the wings. The riff-fest that is 'The Dirtiest Of The Dozen' closes, and this is an Exodus fan's wet dream. It is exactly the sort of track that has been missing from a lot of their recent work, giving not just endless riffing, but hooks that draw you in and have you hum along. The solos are sublime, and have a backing that has a groove that allows them to shine - so much so that we even get a bass solo from Jack Gibson. It's a great track to end the album with as it leaves you wanting more. At just under an hour, the album is just long enough that it doesn't outstay its welcome, and it has enough flavour that going back for another listen is actually quite enticing. The soloing is amazing and memorable, but that isn't surprising with the pedigree of the two men creating them. The best thing about the album is that it feels like a band that is 'now' - A band that is living in this very moment. The last couple of album felt like the band was trying to be something for its audience. This album feels like they are just making music because they enjoy doing it, and that is always where the best albums come from.

Roll On

The Living End - Roll On (2000)

A classic example of a true Alt/Rock band living in the 90's, The Living End smacked everyone in the face with the first track off their debut album in 1998 titled 'Prisoner Of Society'. It was all over Rage and Triple J for a long time. Clearly offering a punch for fans of I dunno what to call it, modern Punk with a Rock edge to it. Following that the album produced many classic songs that set the benchmark for this band. Where to next? Well you needn't look too much further down the track. Roll On continues that classic rock anthem music we all love. And bear in mind now we are in the 2000's and these guys continue to push against the trend with their classic sound. No better example than the first track and title track 'Roll On'. It's your typical 'cockney' like call to arms. Puts a spring in your step and in a way gives you that reason to fight on. From there you have the second track 'Pictures In The Mirror' which got a lot of radio play also. It does seem to lean further into a typical rock sound structure, and you will see continues for most of the remainder of the album. You can certainly notice the maturity of the band, while still showing rebellious taint, they seem to be more directed in what they want their music to present to the listener. 14 tracks and 14 minutes is what you'd typically expect from a punk/rock band. While I don't listen to it all that often, when I do I love the reminiscing. I would say that the only criticism I have is the album goes hard at the beginning with some brilliant songs, but fades away in the second half for me. I kinda feel like I'm waiting for a pump up of some great tracks around track 7 or 8, but it never comes for me. I think that is the difference from it being a great album to being an OK one.

Dave Jerden

David Jerden (July 25, 1949 - February 5, 2025) was an American record producer, audio engineer and mixer. He is best-known for producing, engineering and mixing albums recorded by a variety of bands from the mid-to-late 1980s and 1990s, including Red Hot Chili Peppers, Jane's Addiction, Alice In Chains, Social Distortion, The Offspring, Anthrax, Fishbone, Meat Puppets and Spinal Tap. He had also engineered and mixed albums by The Rolling Stones, Talking Heads and Frank Zappa. However, Jerden had stated that he disliked the term producer, preferring to refer to himself primarily as an engineer. Jerden died on February 5, 2025, at the age of 75.

Dave Krusen

David Karl Krusen (born March 10, 1966) is an American musician. Krusen is best known as the first drummer for the American rock band Pearl Jam and for his work on the band's debut album, Ten (1991). Krusen was also a member of the bands Hovercraft and Unified Theory. He was also the drummer for Candlebox from 1997 to 1999 and from 2015 to 2017. Krusen was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Pearl Jam on April 7, 2017.

Van Conner

Grunge Rock

Van Patrick Conner (March 17, 1967 - January 17, 2023) was an American rock musician, best known as the bassist for Screaming Trees. While he was with Screaming Trees, Conner formed the side project Solomon Grundy, in which he performed lead vocals and guitar. That band released an album in 1990, and during that period Conner also joined a live lineup of Dinosaur Jr. He later formed another side project called Gardener, which released an album in 1999. After the breakup of Screaming Trees in 2000, Conner worked as a session musician and had formed several additional alternative rock bands. In December 2021, Conner fell into a comatose state after suffering complications from emergency stomach surgery. While hospitalized, Conner also contracted an infection of COVID-19, severely worsening his condition. He died from pneumonia on January 17, 2023, at the age of 55.

Capitol Records, often simply known as Capitol, is an American record label owned by Universal Music Group through its Capitol Music Group imprint. It was founded as the first West Coast-based record label of note in the United States in 1942 by Johnny Mercer, Buddy DeSylva, and Glenn E. Wallichs. Capitol was acquired by British music conglomerate EMI as its North American subsidiary in 1955. EMI was acquired by Universal Music Group in 2012 and was merged with the company a year later, making Capitol and the Capitol Music Group both distributed by UMG. Screaming Trees Legacy is a label dedicated to releasing all manner of historic Screaming Trees and Trees related music. The label is run by Screaming Trees songwriter and guitarist Gary Lee Conner.

Stardog Records, a subsidiary of PolyGram Records, was an imprint for Mother Love Bone's releases after the band signed with Mercury Records in 1989.

Hyde Park

Hyde Park is a 350-acre (140-hectare), historic Grade I-listed urban park in Westminster, Greater London, U.K. A Royal Park, it is the largest of the parks and green spaces that form a chain from Kensington Palace through Kensington Gardens and Hyde Park, via Hyde Park Corner and Green Park, past Buckingham Palace to St James's Park. Hyde Park is divided by the Serpentine and the Long Water lakes. In the late 20th century, the park was known for holding large-scale free rock music concerts, featuring groups such as Pink Floyd, The Rolling Stones and Queen. Major events in the park have continued into the 21st century, such as Live 8 in 2005, and the annual Hyde Park Winter Wonderland from 2007.

'Goliath' is the thirteenth studio album by Exodus. It is their first studio album to feature vocalist Rob Dukes since 'The Atrocity Exhibition, Exhibit B (The Human Condition)' (2010), and also the band's first album to be released through Napalm Records, with whom the band signed in 2023.

Exodus is an American thrash metal band formed in 1979 in Richmond, California. Exodus is notable for early on including a then-unknown Kirk Hammett, who was the band's lead guitarist from its inception to his departure in 1983, when he left to join fellow Bay Area thrash metal band Metallica as Dave Mustaine's replacement. Gary Holt has been most consistent member throughout various lineup changes and breakups, and is the only member to appear on all of Exodus' recordings. Much of the band's career has also been affected by feuds between both band members and record companies, two extended hiatuses, deaths of former band members and drug addictions. Along with Metallica, they are often credited as pioneers of the Bay Area thrash metal scene, and have been referred to as one of the region's so-called "big six" alongside Testament, Death Angel, L??z Rockit, Forbidden and Vio-lence. They have sold over five million albums worldwide.

U2 are an Irish rock band from Dublin, formed in 1976. Initially rooted in post-punk, U2's musical style has evolved throughout their career, yet has maintained an anthemic quality built on Bono's expressive vocals and the Edge's chiming, effects-based guitar sounds. Bono's lyrics, often embellished with spiritual imagery, focus on personal and sociopolitical themes. Screaming Trees were an American rock band formed in Ellensburg, Washington, in 1984. Screaming Trees became known as one of the pioneers of grunge along with Melvins, Mudhoney, U-Men, Skin Yard, Soundgarden, Green River, and Malfunkshun, among others. Although widely associated with grunge, the band's sound incorporated hard rock and psychedelic elements. The band announced their official breakup in 2000.

'Silencing Machine' is the sixth album by Nachtmystium.

Nachtmystium is an American psychedelic black metal band formed by Blake Judd, formerly known as Azentrius, and Pat McCormick. The band's name is derived from the German word Nacht meaning "night", and the made-up term mystium which resembles the Latin adjective mysticum. Judd and McCormick combined the words to create the band's name, which they state means "Encompassing Darkness". Controversy marred the band's success when in 2013 Judd was arrested for theft charges and publicly admitted he had a severe drug problem. Nachtmystium went on a four-year hiatus until 2017, when Judd reformed the band to record new studio material and perform at four concerts. Judd disbanded Nachtmystium in 2020, but restarted the project in 2024 to release a new album.

Grinderman was an Australian-American rock band that formed in London, England, U.K., in 2006. The band included Nick Cave (vocals, guitar, organ, piano), Warren Ellis (tenor guitar, electric mandolin, violin, viola, guitar, backing vocals), Martyn P. Casey (bass, guitar, backing vocals) and Jim Sclavunos (drums, percussion, backing vocals). Formed as a side project to Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds, the band was originally known as Mini Seeds and was formed by Cave as 'a way to escape the weight of The Bad Seeds.' The band's name was inspired by a Memphis Slim song, 'Grinder Man Blues,' which Cave is noted to have started singing during one of the band's early rehearsal sessions.

Deicide is an American death metal band formed in Tampa, Florida in 1987 by drummer/composer Steve Asheim and guitarist brothers Eric and Brian Hoffman as Carnage, then hiring bassist/vocalist/lyricist Glen Benton and becoming Amon. They would later change the band name to Deicide in 1989. The band rose to mainstream success in 1992 with their second album 'Legion', and is credited as the second-best-selling death metal band of the Soundscan Era, after Cannibal Corpse. Their lyrics have resulted in bans, lawsuits and criticism from religious groups and the public.

Aiming to recreate the more raw, primal sound of all former related projects such as The Birthday Party, Grinderman's lyrical and musical content diverged significantly from Nick Cave's concurrent work with The Bad Seeds, whose last studio album, Abattoir Blues/The Lyre of Orpheus (2004), was primarily blues, gospel and alternative-orientated. Incidentally, the musical direction of Grinderman influenced The Bad Seeds' next studio album, Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!! (2008).

'Louder Than Hell' is the eighth album by Manowar. It is the first album to feature guitarist Karl Logan, as well as the return of drummer Scott Columbus. Cover art was done by Ken Kelly.

Manowar is an American heavy metal band from Auburn, New York. Formed in 1980, the group is known for lyrics based on fantasy (particularly sword and sorcery) and mythology (particularly Norse mythology and Greco-Roman mythology), as well as numerous songs celebrating the genre and its core audience. The band is also known for a loud and emphatic sound. In 1984, the band was included in the Guinness Book of World Records for delivering the loudest performance, a record which they have since broken on two occasions. They also hold the world record for the longest heavy metal concert after playing for five hours and 1 minute in Bulgaria (at Kavarna Rock Fest) in 2008.

'OU812' (pronounced 'Oh You Ate One Too') is the eighth studio album by Van Halen. It is the band's second album to feature vocalist Sammy Hagar. Van Halen began work on the album in September 1987 and completed it in April 1988, one month before its release. Like its predecessor 5150 (1986), it hit number 1 on the Billboard 200 chart, the second of four consecutive nunber 1 studio albums for the band. The album eventually sold over 4 million copies.

Van Halen was an American rock band formed in Pasadena, California, U.S.A. in 1973. Credited with restoring hard rock to the forefront of the music scene, Van Halen was known for their energetic live performances and the virtuosity of their guitarist, Eddie Van Halen. From 1974 to 1985, Van Halen consisted of Eddie Van Halen, his brother, drummer Alex Van Halen, lead vocalist David Lee Roth, and bassist Michael Anthony. In 1985, Roth left the band to embark on a solo career and was replaced by former Montrose lead vocalist Sammy Hagar. With Hagar, the group released four U.S. number-one, multi-platinum albums over the course of 11 years. Roth returned in 2006, and Anthony was replaced on bass guitar by Eddie's son, Wolfgang Van Halen. Eddie was diagnosed with cancer in 2001, and died of the disease on October 6, 2020. A month after his father's death, Wolfgang confirmed that Van Halen had disbanded. As of March 2019, Van Halen is 20th on the RIAA's list of best-selling artists in the United States; the band has sold 56 million albums in the U.S. and more than 80 million worldwide, making them one of the best-selling groups of all time.

The album hit number 1 on the Billboard 200 chart, surpassing the band's previous album, 1984, which had peaked at number 2 behind Michael Jackson's Thriller album, on which Eddie made a guest appearance.

'Shades Of A Blue Orphanage' is the second studio album by Thin Lizzy. The title is a combination of the members' previous bands: Shades Of Blue and Orphanage.

Thin Lizzy are an Irish hard rock band formed in Dublin in 1969. The band's music reflects a wide range of influences, including blues, soul music, psychedelic rock and traditional Irish folk music, but is generally classified as hard rock or sometimes heavy metal. Bassist Phil Lynott led the group throughout their fourteen-year recording career of twelve studio albums, writing or co-writing almost all the band's material. He was the first Black Irishman to achieve commercial success in the field of rock music. As well as being multiracial, the band drew their early members not only from both sides of the Irish border but also from both the Catholic and Protestant communities during The Troubles.
