Releases by members of Iron Maiden, both past and present.

Iron Maiden were formed in 1975 by bassist Steve Harris. After several lineup changes prior to their recording career, they settled on Harris, vocalist Paul Di'Anno, guitarist Dave Murray and drummer Doug Sampson. Since then many members have passed through the band (and sometimes returned) including guitarist Dennis Stratton and drummer Clive Burr in 1979, guitarist Adrian Smith and vocalist Bruce Dickinson in 1981, drummer Nicko McBrain in 1982, guitarist Janick Gers in 1990, and vocalist Blaze Bayley in 1995.

The Soundhouse Tapes

Iron Maiden - The Soundhouse Tapes
[E.P.]

9 November 1979

'The Soundhouse Tapes' is the debut E.P. by Iron Maiden, and the first recordings by the band. It features three songs taken from the demo tape recorded at Spaceward Studios on 30/31 December 1978. Although major retail chains tried to order large quantities of the record, the band only distributed 5,000 copies, available by mail order alone, which sold out in just a few weeks. Because of this the E.P. is now a valuable collector's item, fetching high prices at online auctions.

Various Artists - Metal For Muthas
[Compilation Album]

15 February 1980

'Metal For Muthas' is a sampling of various better-known artists of the NWOBHM, primarily known for having some of the earliest recorded material by heavy metal legends Iron Maiden. It reached No. 12 on the British L.P. charts and became the basis of a tour by the artists who contributed songs to the compilation. Iron Maiden, who headlined the tour, became largely intertwined with the history of Sanctuary Records (whose namesake was the similarly named Iron Maiden track on the compilation).

Head On

Samson - Head On
[Album]

27 June 1980

'Head On' is the second studio album by Samson. The cover art features the band's masked drummer, Thunderstick. This is the first album with future Iron Maiden-frontman Bruce Dickinson on vocal duties. The instrumental 'Thunderburst' is credited as co-written by Steve Harris. The track is in fact an alternate version of 'The Ides Of March', an early Iron Maiden song written during the brief time in 1977 in which Thunderstick was in Iron Maiden. Iron Maiden released their own version on the Iron Maiden album 'Killers' the next year, though Steve Harris credited the song solely to himself, annoying the members of Samson.

Iron Maiden - Maiden Japan
[E.P.]

1 August 1981

'Maiden Japan' is the second E.P. released by Iron Maiden. Made up of live versions of previously released songs, the title is a pun of Deep Purple's live album 'Made In Japan', but oddly the E.P. was released as 'Heavy Metal Army' in that country. It was the last item released with vocalist Paul Di'Anno before he was replaced by Bruce Dickinson.

[Album]

?? September 1984

'Di'Anno' is the debut studio album of the band of the same name. The lead singer Paul Di'Anno had been the frontman of Iron Maiden for three years, before being dismissed for his erratic behaviour. The band bearing his name and playing very commercial heavy rock was his first and short-lived solo project. Unlike his work with Iron Maiden, the album has a more Americanized sound similar to bands like Journey and Foreigner. The album reached only No. 105 on the U.K. Albums Chart and the band disbanded at the conclusion of the short tour supporting the release.

The album yielded four Top 40 singles in the U.K.

Although it received generally mixed to negative reviews, the album peaked at No. 2 in the U.K. Albums Chart and contains the band's only U.K. Singles Chart No. 1, 'Bring Your Daughter... It also saw the departure of the band's longtime producer Martin Birch, who retired shortly after the release of their previous album, 'Fear Of The Dark' (1992). The album takes a darker tone than the band's first nine releases, due to the lyrics being based on personal issues surrounding Steve Harris at the time, who was in the midst of a divorce.
