Theme: The Pearl Jam Family Tree (1985-Present)

Quick Links: Themes

Releases by members of Pearl Jam, both past and present.

Pearl Jam were formed in Seattle in 1990 after the demise of guitarist Stone Gossard and bassist Jeff Ament's previous bands, Green River and then Mother Love Bone. Mike McCready joined on guitar and Dave Krusen was recruited for drums. San Diego native Eddie Vedder was last to join on vocals. The band's line-up has remained stable, with only the drummer changing. Dave Abbruzzese replaced Dave Krusen shortly after the first album was recorded. In the mid 1990s Jack Irons replaced Dave Abbruzzese, before the band finally had a firm drummer in place when Matt Cameron joined in 1998.

Events:

  • June 1985

Green River release their debut E.P. 'Come On Down' on Homestead Records. It is often cited as the first true 'grunge' record.

  • July 1987

Green River release their second E.P. 'Dry As A Bone' on Sub Pop.

  • June 1988

Green River release their only album 'Rehab Doll' on Sub Pop. Recordeding of the album started in August 1987, but by the end of October the band has split up. They agreed to finish the record even though they had moved on to new bands already, with Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament forming Lords Of The Wasteland (later to become Mother Love Bone) and Mark Arm forming Mudhoney.

  • 19 April 2024

Pearl Jam release their twelth album 'Dark Matter' on Republic Records.

Ten

Pearl Jam - Ten
[Album]

27 August 1991

'Ten' is the debut studio album by Pearl Jam. Following the dissolution of their previous band Mother Love Bone in 1990, bassist Jeff Ament and guitarist Stone Gossard began rehearsing with new guitarist Mike McCready. The group recorded a five-song instrumental demo tape that included contributions from Matt Cameron on drums. Copies of the demo were eventually given to drummer Dave Krusen and vocalist Eddie Vedder, both of whom were invited to audition for the band in Seattle. Many of the songs on Ten were instrumental jams or reworked Mother Love Bone songs for which Vedder provided lyrics. The album was not an immediate commercial success, but by late 1992, it had reached number two on the Billboard 200. Beyond its role in consolidating the mainstream success of grunge rock in the early 1990s, the album is generally considered to have been instrumental in the rise and dominance of alternative rock throughout the decade. It has since been ranked by several publications as one of the greatest albums of all time. By February 2013, it had sold 13 million copies in the U.S., becoming the 22nd record to do so in the Nielsen SoundScan era, and has been certified 13? Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).

No Code

Pearl Jam - No Code
[Album]

27 August 1996

'No Code' is the fourth studio album by Pearl Jam. Following a troubled tour for its previous album, 'Vitalogy' (1994), in which Pearl Jam engaged in a much-publicized boycott of Ticketmaster, the band went into the studio to record its follow-up. The music on the record was more diverse than what the band had done on previous releases, incorporating elements of garage rock and worldbeat. Although No Code debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, making it their third consecutive number one album, it left a large section of the band's fanbase unsatisfied and quickly fell down the charts. Critical reviews were also mixed, with praise to the musical variety but criticism to the album's inconsistency. The album became the first Pearl Jam album to not reach multi-platinum status, receiving a single platinum certification by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) in the United States.
