Album Of The Week: How Do We Add A Rating To Our Releases?

Ratings are of course a very personal thing, but there should still be a benchmark applied for comparison.

 

Benchmarks For Ratings

 

A 5 Star Rating

5 Star Rating

These are releases that we both acknowedge as masterpieces of the genre they are part of.

Examples include:

Metallica - Master Of Puppets (19986)

Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin IV (1971)

Nirvana - Nevermind (1991)

Megadeth - Rust In Peace (1990)

Guns n' Roses - Appetite For Destruction (1987)

Pearl Jam - Ten (1991)

Opeth - Blackwater Park (2001)

Anthrax - Persistence Of Time (1990)

 

A 4 Star Rating

4 Star Rating

These are releases we both agree are not the best the band ever produced, but are still up there as amazing, and are favourites of ours.

Examples include:

Pearl Jam - Vitalogy (1994)

Metallica - Hardwired... To Self Destruct (2016)

Nirvana - Bleach (1989)

Slayer - Seasons In The Abyss (1990)

Alice In Chains - Alice In Chains (1995)

 

A 3 Star Rating

3 Star Rating

These are albums that we have listened to a lot, and really enjoy, but they certainly aren't masterworks.

Examples include:

Metallica - Load (1996)

Anthrax - We've Come For You All (2003)

Megadeth - Risk (1999)

Slayer - Undisputed Attitude (1996)

 

A 2 Star Rating

2 Star Rating

These are releases we would say are 'average'. Listenable, but certainly could be improved upon in many ways.

Examples include:

Megadeth - Super Collider (2013)

Metallica - ReLoad (1997)

Pearl Jam - Binaural (2000)

Smashing Pumpkins - Adore (1998)

Faith No More - Sol Invictus (2015)

 

A 1 Star Rating

1 Star Rating

These releases have a couple of redeeming features, but overall we would probably not return to them after the first listen.

Examples include:

Chris Cornell - Scream (2009)

Judas Priest - Nostradamus (2009)

System Of A Down - Hypnotize (2005)

Lou Reed & Metallica - Lulu (2011)

Silverchair - Young Modern (2007)

Eddie Vedder - Ukulele Songs (2011)

 

A 0 Star Rating

0 Star Rating

These are releases we agree have scraped the barrel, and still got nothing of value. These are terrible, and will never be listened to again.

Examples include:

Bodycount - Murder 4 Hire (2006)

Various Artists - The Metallica Blacklist (2021)

Burzum - ThulĂȘan Mysteries (2020)
