Ratings are of course a very personal thing, but there should still be a benchmark applied for comparison.
These are releases that we both acknowedge as masterpieces of the genre they are part of.
Examples include:
Metallica - Master Of Puppets (19986)
Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin IV (1971)
Nirvana - Nevermind (1991)
Megadeth - Rust In Peace (1990)
Guns n' Roses - Appetite For Destruction (1987)
Pearl Jam - Ten (1991)
Opeth - Blackwater Park (2001)
Anthrax - Persistence Of Time (1990)
These are releases we both agree are not the best the band ever produced, but are still up there as amazing, and are favourites of ours.
Examples include:
Pearl Jam - Vitalogy (1994)
Metallica - Hardwired... To Self Destruct (2016)
Nirvana - Bleach (1989)
Slayer - Seasons In The Abyss (1990)
Alice In Chains - Alice In Chains (1995)
These are albums that we have listened to a lot, and really enjoy, but they certainly aren't masterworks.
Examples include:
Metallica - Load (1996)
Anthrax - We've Come For You All (2003)
Megadeth - Risk (1999)
Slayer - Undisputed Attitude (1996)
These are releases we would say are 'average'. Listenable, but certainly could be improved upon in many ways.
Examples include:
Megadeth - Super Collider (2013)
Metallica - ReLoad (1997)
Pearl Jam - Binaural (2000)
Smashing Pumpkins - Adore (1998)
Faith No More - Sol Invictus (2015)
These releases have a couple of redeeming features, but overall we would probably not return to them after the first listen.
Examples include:
Chris Cornell - Scream (2009)
Judas Priest - Nostradamus (2009)
System Of A Down - Hypnotize (2005)
Lou Reed & Metallica - Lulu (2011)
Silverchair - Young Modern (2007)
Eddie Vedder - Ukulele Songs (2011)
These are releases we agree have scraped the barrel, and still got nothing of value. These are terrible, and will never be listened to again.
Examples include:
Bodycount - Murder 4 Hire (2006)
Various Artists - The Metallica Blacklist (2021)
Burzum - ThulĂȘan Mysteries (2020)
